A device intended to automatically help slow aircraft upon landing wasnt operating when a jet carrying vice-presidential candidate Mike Pence skidded off a La Guardia Airport runway Thursday night, federal investigators said.
The pilots had to manually deploy panels that pop up on top of the wings, called spoilers, delaying by some seconds their effectiveness, the National Transportation Safety Board said Friday.
Under federal rules and safety procedures, aircraft can operate temporarily without the devices automated feature, said Robert Sumwalt, the safety boards vice chairman. It wasnt clear if the spoilers issue contributed to the skidding but, Mr. Sumwalt said, normally, they should work.
Automatic deployment of the spoilers takes about a second while the manual process Thursday night took four seconds, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Just before the big news broke today, some dem was whining that everyone was talking about Pence’s airplane. LOL He got a new topic to talk about. Glad Mike is okay.
“Devices” are mighty prominent this election...
CIA
CIA
CIA
I would put NOTHING past that evil witch, absolutely NOTHING!!!
NEVER allow a CIA man to work on your airplane! (They seem to keep those U-2’s going pretty well, though;)
Three additional seconds at that speed would make a lot of difference.
Especially on a short runway in wet conditions.
Heck of a time and place to have that particular malfunction.
The campaign should reconsider having their planes operated by Fort Marcy Airlines
Ping, see article and comments.
Somebody needs to be checking the maintenance crews.
Hmmmm....
You know better than I, but it just stands to reason how far you can go in three seconds, and IMO, that’s only 3 seconds if you react optimally. It’s probably more than that in most circumstances.
Thanks for your response.
I don’t know. Just speculating.
At most a contributory cause.

Mainly, they landed way too far down the runway instead of aborting the landing and then they deliberately went sideways to almost avoid the safety stuff at the end of the runway meant to slow them down. Doubt the crew will ever fly again.
Thought you might be a pilot. Thanks for the response.
On March 5, 2000 a Southwest crew overshot their landing and wound up on Hollywood Way in Burbank, California.
I’ll bet that was their last flight too.
Ouch! I think they impacted a few vehicles, but there’s no mention of it here.
