If this whole thing is about to blow up in their faces, the whole “if I’m going down, I’m taking you all with me” type scenario, there may be some opting for an even bigger distraction, and just bombing an aspirin factory won’t cut it.

Since they are no longer exporting communist ideology you are right. This doesn’t make us “palzey-wowzey”, but it does mean they are a country we can “work with”. They are back to acting more like a normal historic state and not something leading and exporting a “utopian fantasyland”.
They will have essentially the same goals Imperial Russia had, which means the “Stans” will be reabsorbed as well as Byelorussia and very likely (and sadly!) Ukraine & Armenia.
