Part of the problem that came up in Syria is that there is a national mandatory participation rule for Syrian young men. So over the last decade, prior to this war...a number of young guys did their 18 months at age 18, and then returned home and got into professions or jobs. Well, because of the civil war....Assad is short on military men, so he went back (starting about two years ago) and demanded those released from their mandatory 18 months of service...would be “drafted” back into service. A large segment of the younger gentlemen felt that they’d served their time and didn’t want a return trip.

So, even in safe areas of Syria where the war is not on one’s doorstep....families have made decisions that these 20-to-30 year old sons need to leave the country and escape the potential chance of being forced back into the military.

“The death toll from the perilous crossing is at 3,671 people this year alone.”

the problem with this world, especially the us, is that we are obsessed with what people do to themselves.

Fuqum! Send them home. I will guarantee that at least 95% of them will contribute nothing of any measurable value to whatever country they end up in. And the 5% that might contribute value is not remotely worth the drain of the other 95%

I never knew that very important piece of info. It helps me to understand a little more just what’s going on with the Syrians bedsides being menaced by ISIS.

The military commitment here in the US is 6 years (or was).

When I went in during 1968, I had a 4 year enlistment active and 2 years reserve. Draftees got 2 years active and 4 years reserve. Had the government wanted it could have pulled all of them in for the full 6 years of active status.

Well they should return and fight for their nation. It’s their duty. So they leave their women, children, and elderly behind? They have no honor. We don’t need them here.
