It could be the hottest outgrowth of the pot-conomy highly lucrative for both investors and cannabis companies. The industrial real estate that houses pot production is in high demand, and it is about to become the first opportunity for investors large and small to get in on marijuana.
How? The biggest problem for cannabis growers and suppliers is an inability to get much-needed cash to grow both their products and their businesses. Since cannabis production and use is not legal under federal law, only state to state, most banks won't lend to cannabis producers. Enter, the real estate angle.
The first-ever cannabis REIT (real estate investment trust) filed to go public last week and is in talks to acquire its first property in New York state for $30 million, according to a prospectus.
Innovative Industrial Properties, a newly formed corporation, will focus on buying the properties of specialized industrial medical cannabis facilities. That will provide the cannabis growers and sellers with plenty of capital; the REIT, in turn, will offer the cannabis companies lease-back deals so no one has to move.
As the appetite for cannabis grows, so too, can the profits for the REIT, which will collect rent as well as benefit from increasing property values.

Rural property in Oregon is sky rocketing in price.
Drugs has been a real growth industry under Obammy.
We are hoping that the MJ for FL is voted down again. If you need dope, go to the state that has legalized it and get your dope there. That state, by the way, is having a boom in problems related to the MJ, some good but most bad. Colorado is having a boom in land sales, pot sales, pot shops and is even considering MJ for beer. (A brewery is replacing hops with MJ.)
The down side is that kids are getting the drug earlier and petty crimes have increased. New people immigrating, such as more Mexicans and the new breed, Laotians. Not a pretty site, and we don’t need any of that in FL.
With pharmaceutical pain relievers nearly illegal and the government not caring if people are unproductive on drugs, of course drugs like marijuana are booming.
That’s a Retirement Plan,right there!
It’s like Amsterdam, all of the stoners from all over Europe go there, but the Dutch themselves stay away from it.
Cattle Ranchers been here for Generations moving their Cattle elsewhere, Water table going to heck Law enforcement says cannot protect the citizens, etc etc.
I agree 100%. Except I live in Alaska who has legalized it. You get and you get kids are getting acccess to it. From personal experience.
Yes, it is. My daughter remarked about how sad it was in Amsterdam, to see the addicts roaming about in the morning, looking for their next fix. That was over 25 years ago. Probably hasn’t improved.
If you are in Florida, you know that Attorney John Morgan, who vowed to not bring up Medical MJ again if it was defeated, is leading the charge to get voter approval again. It is # 2 on the ballot.
As usual, all of the proposed Amendments are “Trojan Horses.”
Something bad hidden in every one of them.
I am a Gator fan are you also?...
Cannabis sativa is one of the most important crops in human history:
It is extraordinary in its high globular protein content, its balanced essential fatty acid content (including both first derivatives of both essential fatty acids), and its superior natural fiber, which has been used for clothes and ropes for centuries.
Marijuana (as I understand it) is an artificial cultivar of the female flowering plant.
I have never ingested marijuana in any form; I consume what is now called industrial hemp on a regular basis.
Several of the Founding fathers were hemp farmers.
Hemp is so valuable that the USA suspended the marijuana laws in WWII in order to grow hemp for the war effort.
You neglected to reference the very high caloric content of cannabis seeds, which in many cultures were used as a last ditch effort to avoid starvation in early spring.
