Video Link -- I only learned about Arduino yesterday. This might not be the best video to explain what it is, but it will introduce you to the concept.
Arduino is an open source company in Italy IIRC that essentially marries cheap-off-the-shelf hardware to simple code such that you and I can develop our own moving things (i.e. robots, drones, motorized camera mounts, etc.). The only limits are your imagination and determination.

Good post. Good subject for any technically inclined person to be aware of, or persue.
Pretty much limitless power of automation with minimal formal training.
Eventually, PC's and Apples became user friendly and, well, here we are...Freeping to our heart's content.
Arduino is the user friendly aspect of the marriage of cheap hardware and your own easily written code.
This is the next stage in the computer/robot evolution.
When the internet of things hits the world, your local plumber and mechanic (perhaps even you) will be installing it locally...using something like Arduino.
We can create and install our own home security systems, create our own robot to mow our lawns and clean our houses.
Perhaps this technology IS the future.
But remember that at least one major league pitcher is unable to change the batteries in his off-the-shelf drone without slicing the side of his finger off.
Best invention out of MIT,
other than 3D printing and the Internet.

I believe people are much smarter than they think they are.
What stands in their way is intimidation.
We as humans are intimidated by what we don't know.
It isn't difficult, but it is scary when we don't understand it.
Once we get over the psychological fear of new things, we zoom into new knowledge.
And BTW, psychological fear is empty...never warranted.

Arduino software is a simple loop, but effective.
This makes it even easier to work with arduinos.
Keep at it they are great fun very practical and very cheap. I've got a half dozen of these controlling the various cnc/robots I've built.
My thinking is that to have success, one must have an objective. That is sometimes the hardest part. A person can study this stuff all day, but unless there is a tangible problem to be solved, all is lost.
So one must have a need, such as a sprinker timer, lighting timer, garage door closer if I forget, ......
Otherwise, if no problem to be solved, no gain from pursuing this.
I speak from decades of such experience and success.
I also believe that this thinking applies to everything in life. Sort of like teaching a man to fish vs. giving a man a fish.
One must teach oneself, but the harder part is knowing what to learn. To know that, one must know what problem needs to be solved.
