The US government’s plan to relinquish stewardship of key internet governance functions is under attack from Republicans who are using blatant falsehoods and fear-mongering to obstruct the historic transfer, according to internet policy experts.
Led by Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Republicans are working to sabotage the US government’s long-standing plan to transfer oversight of core internet technical functions, including management of the Domain Name System (DNS), to a nonprofit group of global stakeholders.

Aside from having a central authority for assigning domain names as ICANN does now, I see no upside to a global cabal (like the UN) having a positive impact on securing any user’s freedom of access. Presently, countries like China are restricting internet access for their own population. It doesn’t take a tin foil hat to foresee the possibility that this international body modeled on the U.N. would not or could not use internet access as another weapon in the international sanctions game. There are already suggestions of blocking domains that promote Islamic radicalization and terrorist recruiting. Why would the opposite threat - blocking domains for an entire country’s domains because it promotes anti-Islamic speech or violates some prehistoric tenet of Sharia Law? As much as I’d like to see hate speech sites like Democratic Underground being shut down, I’m smart enough to know that if they can do it for thee, they can do it for me. No good can come from this.
