LONDON, Oct 11 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - One girl under 15 is married every seven seconds, according to a report by Save the Children released on Tuesday, with girls as young as 10 married off - often to much older men - in countries including Afghanistan, Yemen, India and Somalia.
Early marriage not only deprives girls of education and opportunities but increases the risk of death or childbirth injuries if they have babies before their bodies are ready.
"Child marriage starts a cycle of disadvantage that denies girls the most basic rights to learn, develop and be children," said Save the Children International CEO Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

As i understand it, those kids arent child brides. Theyre guests, relatives of those getting married, at a wedding in the gaza strip at a mass wedding of people who were 16 at the youngest. Most of the brides and grooms were over 18 years old. The little ones are dressed like brides only because its tradition over there to dress similarly to the bride.

Fair question, and I don’t know the answer. But the practice of not marrying until 20+ is a relatively modern phenomenon. Parents’ basements seem to be made too comfortably these days.

In Ancient Rome, marriage could take place after age 12.
Later, the age began to rise.
But we must remember that women were basically their father’s property. The girl would be given to a man so that her father could receive some benefit. Marriage at age 12 might not have been good for her — but who cares about her? The point is that her father — her patrilineal line — is reaping a benefit.
The Mohammadans are still living in that world.
Most of us now think that females are humans who have rights of their own and can make decisions on their own behalf.
