RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Governor Pat McCrory said Monday there have been 10 deaths in North Carolina from Hurricane Matthew. Five people are still missing. Officials say most of the dead died when rushing flood waters swept their cars off roads.

During a news conference, the governor also said a levee has breached near Lumberton and some 1,500 people are stranded. There are active rescues using helicopters and boats.

Aftermath of Hurricane Matthew - the damage is still ongoing. Lumberton is near the NC/SC border and near I95 which was shut down part of yesterday and the day before due to the flood waters. There are other dams across Eastern NC which may be breeched as the rivers down East crest.

Prayers for the people of Lumberton and elsewhere who are even now being rescued.

I never understand people who think they can drive through major storms. Before I opened this thread I guessed the dead were people in their cars.

Tidewater Virginia got slammed and was well over a hundred miles away from the main storm. Flooding, power outages, trees down, etc.

I am shocked at the lack of coverage in the national news. It just disappeared from the front pages and I have had a hard time finding updates and pictures, etc. Thanks for posting this! I need the reminders here in landlocked Missouri to continue to pray for all of those affected by Matthew.

You’re very welcome.

The Weather Channel reporters were in Lumberton yesterday so at least they know this storm’s effects are not over.

I agree. But some of these cars were trapped by rising waters evidently. IN other words, they were not driving through the water, it just encompassed them where they were - according to the Weather Channel people yesterday.

Thanks for that information - very little was said on the national or local news here about what happened in Virginia!

My rain gauge holds 9 measured inches plus about 2/3 of an inch at the top. It overflowed relatively early in the storm. If you told me we had 12 inches, I wouldn't argue.

According to my home weather station, the strongest wind gust was 61 mph. We get thunderstorm gusts that strong all the time. It's those sustained winds that scare me. If the wind blows 60+ mph for hours on end, then I'm gonna lose a lot of trees, like with Fran in '96 and Floyd in '99.

I'm in central NC between Raleigh and Fayetteville.

I know but rapidly rising water is what hurricanes do. Everybody had warning for more than a week!

Just a few moments ago I got my power restored in Coastal Georgia. The first thing I saw was the terrible floods in the Fayetteville area where my daughter lives. That damn storm affected my whole family. She is okay thank goodness .But who would have guessed a storm that affects Ft Lauderdale would kill in North Carolina and keep me from seeing my house in Georgia.

Glad you didn’t lose those trees this time. Many here in Raleigh did lose trees....and many still don’t have power.

Glad your daughter and you are okay.

Yes, Fayetteville got really hammered. So did Lumberton, Kinston, Goldsboro, and many other towns, especially on the coast.

I know - the storm which affected Florida really devastated NC towns and rivers. What a storm!
