In a recent episode of “Modern Family,” two children, a boy and a girl, play a round of broom hockey in a living room. In those 12 seconds, the first openly transgender child appeared as a transgender character in a mainstream sitcom.
The performance of Jackson Millarker, 8, is part of a new era in television, signified by a small but growing number of transgender characters. It is inspiring talent agents, writers, producers and parents to gingerly explore a frontier within a frontier as they bring young actors into the fold.
Jackson’s character, Tom, is not the only one to make headlines this season. In the third season of “Transparent” on Amazon, Sophia Grace Gianna played a young version of the lead character, a transgender woman named Maura Pfeffermann.
“It’s the story of Maura when she was sort of having to hide away,” Sophia, the 12-year-old actress who plays young Maura, said of her performance. “That was kind of a metaphor for trans people having always been there, but hidden.”
Zackary Drucker, a producer on “Transparent,” said she did not think that these two performances would necessarily begin an immediate trend of transgender children appearing in droves on TV. For one reason, the talent pool is drawing from a relatively small population. The number of transgender children in the United States is unknown, and little research has been done on early childhood gender identity. But some estimates suggest that the number of transgender adolescents amount to under 1 percent of that population.

I have never watched an episode of Modern Family.
Parents who indulge obvious mental illness should be charged with child abuse.
Same here. I haven’t watched broadcast TV for almost a decade, now. I have no idea what ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. are airing, and I am quite happy about that.
The parents are the sick ones, not the child. This is a case for the local SVU cops.

Children led astray bt their mentally ill and sociopathic parents. There will be hell to pay now or later. The parents are creating little serial killers and don’t even know it. Maybe they’ll discover the same moment justice is served.
I tried once but the gay flamboyant characters and the women with the thick high pitch whining accent made me change the channel.
Child actors now need two sets of publicity photos, one for each gender they hope to portray.

Some actors may need additional voice and acting lessons to realistically bend their gender. How over the top should they act?
No, that’s wrong. “I am Jazz” has been on for a couple of years at least. The XY kid on that show has been on hormones and, iirc, has already had the surgery or that’s what the previews indicated last Spring.
The tabloids put out that one of the teen sons on the show came out of the closet. It’s no wonder being around such flamoyancy.

Transgender discussions remind me of the character in “Airplane!” who thought he was Ethel Merman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmZdqsCW8vM , the character in “Arsenic and Old Lace” who thought he was Teddy Roosevelt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGyfOMCRBn0 , James Stewart with his best friend “Harvey” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKECvqSVWPA , and other delusional characters in movies. The difference is that today the whole cast (or their real-world family) plays along with their fantasies instead of making at least some effort to help them remain in touch with reality.
