Wendy Mueller was standing at the copper sink in her gorgeous, historic Leesburg, Va., home last Wednesday afternoon when the knife she was holding slipped and cut her thumb.
Then the phone rang.
It wasnt a number she recognized, but distracted by the bleeding thumb, she answered it. Mom always answers the phone.
She heard screaming. It sounded exactly like her 23-year-old daughters voice, begging for help.
Then an unfamiliar voice announced, We have your daughter.

You better see a Doctor she has a very contagious disease
Wow, that is very interesting.
“It wasnt a number she recognized, but distracted by the bleeding thumb, she answered it. Mom always answers the phone.”
Author is clearly an idiot who cannot write a coherent passage.
Washington Post is a joke all the way around including this stupid story.
No matter what - if this kind of thing happens you call the cops from another line.
The writing is stupid, yet another attempt by a staff reporter to become a great author. But the story itself is important.
My family has their orders. Under no circumstances are they to pay any kind of ransom to retrieve me. But they are authorized to pay anything they wish to capture and kill the perps!
Of course, it ain’t gonna happen anyway, ‘less I win the lottery...
Generally this scam is done by a call to a grand parent where they say the teenager / young adult was caught in a foreign country with drugs. I know more than one sane person that has fell for this scam. One friend went to wire the money and the pharmacist refused telling her it was a scam. She went to another place to get one.
This happened to me on the way to the Airport. Except the story was different. I answered and was distracted since my husband and I were going to stop and get lunch before leaving on trip. The guy started out saying that my family member was in an accident and he was asked to call me. He basically got my daughter name out of me because he acted like she was too hurt to give him much info. So then he proceeded to tell me that him and his brother were fugitives and did not want the police involved and that because my daughter hit his brothers car that he wanted me to pay to have it fixed. I asked to speak to my daughter and the whole time my husband is listening to my conversation and is trying to call my daughter the whole time by she was at work and could not answer her phone since she had a client on the phone. I then put the guy on speaker on my cell and at that point he got belligerent and started cussing my out and told me that his brother had my daughter at gun point down in the basement and would only release her if I paid him some money. I then hung up the phone since I live in Texas and we do not have basements. But he did tried to call back. It took me 2 hrs to calm and while at the airport I called the non emergency police line just to report it and never did hear back from them.
People need to be careful about providing info. there are scammers every where.
But they are authorized to pay anything they wish to capture and kill the perps!

Mel Gibson in Ransom did just that ...
I think the ransom price was $2 Million and he offered it to whomever lead him to the kidnappers...
“the copper sink in her gorgeous, historic Leesburg, Va., home”
It’s funny.
If I was a Washington Post liberal I’d say this is a story about the evil White Privilige and this is only a Racist White People story.
Interesting the Post ran it.
“I’m sorry, if you are looking for the White House you got the wrong number. I’m sure when you get them they will give you 100M.”
Im sorry, if you are looking for the White House you got the wrong number. Im sure when you get them they will give you 100M. or Better yet, they may even give you a Blind sheik for her.
“Generally this scam is done by a call to a grand parent where they say the teenager / young adult was caught in a foreign country with drugs.”
Yeah.
The title of this story should be Stupid Woman Falls for Scam, or, Is This the Worlds Most Stupid Woman?
It’s the sort of thing maybe old woman Hillary voters who read the Washington Post and write for it might believe.
This happened to a friend’s parents. The lady was suppose to go out of town on a retreat and said at the last minute she felt uncomfortable. So she stayed home. About 10 that evening her elderly mother got a phone call saying she was kidnapped”. Her father called the police.
When DPPD showed up they determined the phone call originated in Mexico. The detective told them there were 5 other similar reports that evening. There may have been others not reported. The concern then was were the criminals trying to distract law enforcement to commit some other crime beyond scamming the locals.
“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don’t have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.”
Way to go, Petula. You just set mom up for a robbery in her gorgeous house with the copper sink.
He's a gun grabbing liberal wimp.
It happened to my daughter saying they had me! Something about maybe an accident with my SUV and I have a sedan. She knew it was bogus and blew them off but immediately went to the near-by Florida State Police barracks to report it and call me.
I freaked out at work when the women answering our phone came to me and said “The Florida State Police want to talk to you!!”
My daughter asked me “Why are you crying, did you think I got arrested?” I said “No, I thought you were severely injured or dead!” She thought that was funny. I didn’t!!
