It would not have been much of a draw under any conditions, but against the first presidential debate, Falcons/Saints was about as minuscule a draw as Monday Night Football has ever seen.
The Week 3 Falcons/Saints Monday Night Football game earned a 5.7 overnight rating, down 36% from Chiefs/Packers last year (8.9), down 38% from Bears/Jets in 2014 (9.2) and the lowest for any NFL telecast through the first three weeks of the season. Ratings peaked at a 6.9 from 8:45-9 PM ET, the final quarter-hour before the debate started.
The 5.7 is likely the lowest in the history of Monday Night Football. Complete overnight records were unavailable, but the lowest final rating in franchise history is a 5.1. No other MNF telecast has gone lower than 5.7 in the final nationals.
Coverage aired opposite the first presidential debate, which had a combined 46.2 rating across nine broadcast and cable networks. The last time MNF faced a presidential debate, Week 7 in 2012, Lions/Bears scored a 7.3 overnight. That game faced both a presidential debate and Game 7 of the MLB National League Championship Series.
ESPNs telecast earned a 14.1 rating in Atlanta and a 12.5 in New Orleans. Coverage was simulcast on local affiliates in both markets, earning a 25.8 on New Orleans NBC affiliate WDSU. Local affiliate ratings in Atlanta were not immediately available. Denver was the top neutral market with an 8.7, with Richmond (7.7) and Nashville (7.4) rounding out the top five.
turn out the lights......the party’s over.....
We the American People think the condition of our Nation is far more important than a game where ungrateful people who are paid highly for doing nothing is worth watching...
The debate did take some viewers but there are many like me who have given it up.
I would not want to oppress them by watching them play a game for millions of dollars.
I’m 3 weeks into my NFL boycott and my life seems OK.
LOL !!! Oh Dandy Don ... haven’t heard that in years !!!
Still watch when I can and listen always to my Dallas Cowboys, the rest of the felon league not so much. College football is much more entertaining
They are going to have to start fudging the numbers like unemployment.
I am semi boycotting the NFL. I haven’t watched the game, but I check the scores and have a fantasy team. Ironically, my fantasy team might be the best one I have ever made.
Ding Ding Ding!!

Here’s the drop off explained.
No one is boycotting their local team.
Many are boycotting every other team/game.
I’ve never had an interest in watching the NFL outside the Steelers. If they’re not on Thursday, Sunday or Monday night I’ve never watched who was on.
I think that’s what’s spread.

Occam’s Razor answer: Because the Bears were playing.
This season that team is actually painful to watch.
MNF would have been an alternative to watching the debate except for 1) the Anthem protests and 2) a poor match-up. Instead, the only thing was the Mad Max festival to remind me of post-Hillary America.
Concur, I watch the Steelers every possible chance, I even was able to go in person to the pre-season game in Charlotte. Not really interested in the other games.
However, the Steeler game last Sunday was just excruciating. The station here changed games before the end of the Third Quarter. I can’t remember when we have been spanked that badly, and by the Eagles of all people. Ugh.
There was a game last night...?
Yes, they will all need some Black Sport Privilege counseling, and publicly renounce their Black Sport Privilege, before I’ll look at them again.
As a Dallas fan, this Sunday’s game will be a tough call. They play the PhonyWhiners. I’ll tune in for Dallas, not the opposition.
