Changing who controls ICANN jeopardizes our presidential election
The Hill ^ | 9/20/16 | Theresa Peyton

Posted on 09/20/2016 10:24:57 PM PDT by Freedom56v2

Changing who controls the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) so close to our presidential election will jeopardize the results of how you vote on Nov. 8 unless Congress stops this changeover. When the calendar hits Sept. 30, a mere 6 weeks before our election, the United States cannot be assured that if any web site is hacked, the responsible party will be held accountable. We cannot be sure if a web site is a valid. We cannot be sure if one country is being favored over another. These are all the things ICANN is responsible for and has worked perfectly since the Internet was created. Why change it now and so close to the election? Why does that matter to you as a voter?

Take a look at recent cyber activity as it relates to the election. The Democratic National Convention was breached comprising the entire party’s strategy, donor base, and indeed, national convention. Everything the DNC had done to prepare for a moment four years in the making (if not longer) was undermined by a hacker who had been in their system for some time but waited for the optimal moment to spring it on the DNC – opening day of the convention. The FBI and other U.S. agencies, as the headlines blare, suspect Russia is responsible for the hack. Recently, Vladimir Putin went so far as to say, "Does it matter who broke in? Surely what's important is the content of what was released to the public.”

It matters to all of us whether we live in the United States or not, if a hostile country can undermine our democratic process. There is even more alarming evidence this is happening during this election cycle.

Hat tip Drudge!

More from the article:

Russian hackers are suspected of breaching voter registration systems in Illinois and Arizona.

Arizona went so far as to shut down the state’s voter registration system for a week. No data was stolen but it was downloaded. As for Illinois, some voter data was stolen!

ICANN does more than just assign and/or approve your website’s domain. ICANN has its own Security and Stability Advisory Committee, which “engages in ongoing threat assessment and risk analysis of the Internet naming and address allocation services to assess where the principal threats to stability and security lie, and advises the ICANN community accordingly.” They are equivalent to your security guard at the bank. Why change the security guard now when voter data is more vulnerable – and prized - than ever?

If ICANN changes hands, so do the security measures taken to protect the rightful owner of your web site. If a site was hijacked today – not an uncommon crime in the cyber world - to reassert yourself as the rightful owner, you would go through law enforcement channels, your domain provider, and yes, ICANN.

When a significant event happens to a web site, businesses, cyber securities companies, and ICANN all know their roles and act together in tandem to mitigate the threat. They are in lockstep with an emergency call plan that has been mapped out through trial and error over the years.

ICANN’s actions have made the internet safer for you. Will that still hold true after Sept. 30?

Another one of the major parting gifts the evil man in the white house plans.

And just in time to hack the electoral system for Hillary. Yay.

No. If ICANN is not here in the USA, nothing will be stable.

Agreed, and there are some trying to stop this from going forward.

This week will be heating up....On Wednesday, Sean Duffy, GOP Rep from Wisconsin, will be updating on his Facebook and his website regarding the Internet Giveaway and the bills being introduced to stop it.

What can be done is to call Senators and Congresscritters and ask them to VOTE FOR THE PROTECTION OF INTERNET FREEDOM ACT. Hoping for vote this week or next...

HOUSE BILL HR5418 WILL BE READY FOR A VOTE...WE NEED TO CONTACT OUR CONGRESS REPS TO SUPPORT THE PROTECTION INTERNET FREEDOM ACT, HR5418.

SENATE COMPLEMENTARY BILL IS SB3034.

KEY IS GETTING IT VOTED ON THIS TERM. I WILL BE CONTACTING MY REP AND SENATORS ASKING THEM TO VOTE FOR THESE BILLS.

I ALSO WILL BE CONTACTING RYAN AND MCCONNELL OFFICES

Yes! ALL OUR INTERNET BELONG TO US ;)

WQe did fund it thru DOD ARPANET project. Our $$, not the UN’s money...

Mere fact that Obama and his globalist tech chronies want to move ICANN offshore is troubling...Globalists are incrementalists...Once they get nose in tent, hard to pull it out :(

Can call our “elected representatives” as noted in an earlier post #6 as there are 2 bills being considered to stop this—we have been stopping this transfer for 2 years already—why not a third?

I tweeted this to everyone I know. We need to seriously call, write, or tweet Congress critters that we’re onto them and if they let this stand, we will have revenge.

Wow, thanks for taking some action, Kenny! You made my night :)

I figure if Drudge is putting this story in first column as first item under the headline, it was important to get the word out now...

I don’t know that they don’t want it to pass—they just are so preoccupied with everything else...Plus all the world and National events occurring has really crunched their time...Figures when they wait till last minute...

Duffy, a main sponsor of the House bill was supposed to go on TV last night, but he was cancelled due to the terrorist attacks over the weekend...

Plus I just am not sure a lot of the Reps know about this issue...My spouse contacted our Rep and received a very nice personal response...The Rep said they did not want transfer to go thru and agreed with my spouse’s concerns, but seemed totally unaware that there are 30 co-sponsors to the HR5418...as he referenced a vote on it from 2015...

If Ryan and McConnell allow these bills which I noted in Post #6 to come to floor, this can be stopped~and it has to be before September 30!

I am calling Ryan and McConnell to urge them to bring it to a vote...They are lousy leaders, and I am not sure where they stand on the issue. My Senator has been getting calls :)

Again, thanks!

obama has f***ed up everything he’s touched, and now he wants to give away control of the Internet to his globalist pals.

It’ll be a wonder if the USA EVER recovers from all the damage done by the democrat party hack in the White House.

The internet is dead. Has been for decades.

Can we be sure that things on the internet are real ? True ?

No. Never could. Stop asking.

I agree with you 100%!!!

I just hope word gets out on this...Sean Duffy’s (leading charge in House) office aide said they hope it will be voted on before the September 30 deadline...I think pressure needs to be brought on our elected Reps and the leadership...I remember how Harry Reid would stop bills from coming to the floor.

With the Debate on Monday, that will tie up the news cycles after that for at least a couple days, so I figure it is good idea to try to make some noise about it now...

I have heard nothing about this on Fox News or any Talk Radio. I hope I am wrong and just missed some coverage of the issue.

Anyway, I don’t trust this bunch of technocrats and globalists chronies of Obama...Pretty much anything Obama wants to do, I am against. This philosophy has served me well.

Hey thanks for posting this on an action thread...nice big glass of ice water dumped.

With all due respect, if this is the way you feel, then why are you even here on Free Republic? Seriously, why?

“How can you be sure things are real? True? No. Never could. Stop asking.”

Say what??? That is the most bizarre thing I have read in along time...

Fine with me if you want to depend on short=wave or l980-style “Conspiracy Theory movie” newsletters, suit yourself...

I personally think true conservatives and patriots need to keep all aspects of the the internet free and in the US so we can determine what is truly going on. Yes, there are plenty of false stories, phonies, etc...but the internet has not been dead for decades...If it was, the globalists would not be so intent on shutting down conservative websites.

As an example of using internet to get truth...tonight there are riots going on in Charlotte, NC, but you likely would not know that if all you had was TV for news. Fox did air a short segment on it hours ago, but the riots are still going on...CNN had no coverage.

The internet is not dead to me—at least not yet and I intend to make every effort to keep it that way. That is what this thread is about.
