Plastic crockery and cutlery is to be banned in France unless it is made from biologically sourced materials.

The law comes into force in 2020. It is part of a French environmental initiative called the Energy Transition for Green Growth, part of a package aimed at tackling climate change.

But, the Independent reported, the move faces a challenge from Pack2Go Europe, a Brussels-based organisation representing European packaging manufacturers.

"We are urging the European Commission to do the right thing and to take legal action against France for infringing European law," said Eamonn Bates, secretary general of Pack2go Europe.

He said there was no proof that biologically sourced material was any more environmentally beneficial.

You learn something new every day... Apparently, the French use cutlery to eat with. I always thought they used their fingers and toes.

I’m old-—I grew up without plastic cutlery.

This is no big deal.

Plastic crockery and cutlery is to be banned in France unless it is made from biologically sourced materials.

Umm...given that 'plastic' is derived from petroleum products...and the given where petroleum products come from...can they not be considered biologically sourced?

I can’t imagine any self-respecting Frenchman would use plastic cutlery to begin with.

Think about that for a minute.

What will fast food restaurants do now? They’ll have to have cutlery in their eat-in restaurants, and can’t provide eating utensils to anyone taking food out.

This is just idiotic.

So, the french are going back to before the Dark Ages when men ate from wooden plates and wood spoons? Everything else, crockery, glass, Porcelain all require energy to produce.

Aside: I want to build a cruising boat.

Granted, it would never be a super yacht ... but I still want silver service.

Spork themed silver service.

Dinner sporks, salad sporks, shrimp sporks, soup sporks, serving sporks, dinner knorks (knife / fork combos), butter knorks, carving knorks and so forth.

If the alternatives cost more that is a huge clue they consume more resources and emit more pollution.

Plastic cutlery is what the plebes use. Our enlightened betters are never served with the wretched stuff. It was a no-brainer to ban it.

Hmm...put out to sea with silver sporkware on board, and you’ll be polishing a lot of tarnished sporks.
