U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers are scheduled to enforce security zones on the East River near the United Nations Headquarters beginning Friday.

The security zones scheduled to begin Sept. 16, and continue until Sept. 25, 2016, include all waters of the East River between East 35th Street and the Queensboro/59th Street Bridge.

I guess they're up to no good. They probably fear the American people rising up against these foreign busybody fascists.

Oh for the love of me, what ever happened to those nice Italian Construction workers who busted up the commies back in 1970? I know we still got people like that in NYC despite all the garbage in that city, why can't they don hardhats, storm the UN and tell them to take their socialist agenda and what to do with it?

The spotlight will be on Syria when world leaders gather at the United Nations next week as the United States and Russia try to shore up a fragile truce deal and President Barack Obama pushes for a boost in global refugee aid.

Some 135 heads of state and government and dozens of ministers will attend the 71st General Assembly, the last for both Obama and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who will step down at the end of 2016 after a decade in the job.

As a kid I once went on a tour of the UN headquarters. One of the things we were told was that someone once tried to fire a mortar at the UN from across the East River.

I just remembered this when I saw this thread and I was curious what it was all about. Apparently the mortar incident happened on December 11th, 1964 when Che Guevara was speaking the UN. A single shell was fired which fell slightly short but did explode in the river.

Obama is IMO the next Secretary General of the UN ...... or at least he will be in the running for the position. Ki-Moons departure is perfect timing or is that a term limit deal ?

Just my opinion of course.

My office is near there on 47th and Lex, even the Metro North is crowded as people leave their cars home. Gridlock City!

They’d have to change the rules and, frankly, I don’t think they like Obama that much anymore. A secretary general can’t be from a country that is a member of the Security Counsel.

One time they wouldn’t let me into my apt. because I didn’t have ID. Also, the Israeli consulate is around the corner and subject at this time for massive, evil demonstrations.

It’s a 5 yr term, generally limited to 2 terms. Obama could probably move back to Kenya if he wants to be UN SecGen.

Effective range of a bazooka is only 150 - 200 yds.

Hey, it's the NY Times. Take it for what it's worth. My memory of this 50+ year old incident is that it was described as some kind of home made mortar.
