For much of the summer, Hillary Clinton deliberately kept a low public profile, fund-raising in private and pursuing a hands-off campaign strategy: If Donald J. Trump wanted to seize center stage by picking unpopular fights — with a Gold Star father, a federal judge, the leaders of his own party — she would not stand in his way.
Now, sidelined with pneumonia just as she hoped to reintroduce herself with a series of more personal policy speeches, Mrs. Clinton has left herself uniquely vulnerable to an unplanned absence.
Her dismal public standing on questions of candor, combined with decades of conspiracy theories about her health, had already produced an uncommon challenge for aides and supporters seeking to tamp down speculation about her physical condition.
More substantively, among Democrats worried that Mrs. Clinton has failed to make a more forceful case for her candidacy since the party’s convention, her illness has reinforced the danger of a Trump-centric strategy — leaving the Clinton side without a memorable affirmative message to hammer home, especially when its chief messenger is on the mend.
The focus on Mr. Trump has done little to remedy Mrs. Clinton’s trust deficit with voters. And despite volumes of policy proposals, even Clinton supporters often strain to identify cohesive themes, independent of Mr. Trump, in her campaign.
Aides said last week that she planned to deliver several speeches aimed at connecting her personal motivations to her political agenda. The second in the series, slated for Tuesday, was postponed after she fell ill.
“They’ve clearly framed the race as a referendum on Donald Trump,” said Steve McMahon, a longtime Democratic strategist. “That does create a vacuum and a greater level of interest in things like this that, frankly, probably have no special significance.”

Boxers or briefs?
"Conspiracy theories about her health"? The NYT may not have noticed, but Hillary has at least one VERY serious health issue. This is not a conspiracy theory: (1) it is a documented, observable fact, and (2) there is a cooperative effort involving the media and her handlers (i.e., a conspiracy) to hide the truth - proof that the truth is so terrible (for her) that it would derail her plans to seize power over our lives.
She kept a low.profile during the summer?? The Times is overlooking why she did that. Was it because she’s been in ill health all summer?? They make it sound as if it was a campaign strategy to let Trump takes hits for his gaffes and stay out of the way. But was it really some strategy or the fact that Hillary just can’t keep up.physically ???
Bunch of baloney. Obama approval is high right now, because he has maintained a low profile. Hillary is sick. No doubt about it, but for her to stay low profile isn’t going to hurt her numbers one bit. Matter of fact will help her somewhat, and that’s their goal right now. It also gives her an out for the upcoming debates, and of course the sympathy votes won’t be rejected.
That way she could collapse in private.

Yeah that was one of the biggest fibs that stood out from another jive talking Times ‘reporter’.
It will be interesting to see new poll numbers in a week. On the one hand, Hillary does better the less she is seen or heard. On the other hand, the video from 9/11 is devastating.

I’ve lived in Communist countries, and I am amazed how similar the behavior of NY Times and other leftist media outlets is to media in communist countries.
Any narrative or story that has not been approved is sheer rumor-mongering (ie. Hillary’s health one week ago). Once the central committee have approved a story may be spoken about, and have provided the narrative about it, the articles and analysis explaining it twenty different ways come pouring out.
We now have endless analysis from the US media about what the implications are of Hillary having “pneumonia.”
Amazing isn’t it?
Hillary should already be 10 points down BEFORE this past weekend but...maybe she really is with the propaganda ministry’s (MSM) help it’s being covered up.
Notice how the NYT just gobbles up the pneumonia narrative like a 2 year old gobbles small magnets and whatever else they can get in their mouths?
They can’t expect to be paid for this much longer. What I want to know is what she’s got, and it ain’t pneumonia.
