Washington (AFP) - Hillary Clinton's White House bid stumbled Monday as a bout of pneumonia gave her rival Donald Trump a new opening to question her fitness for office, while pledging to release details on his own health soon.
In his first public comments since the Democrat Clinton was taken ill at a 9/11 ceremony in New York Sunday, an unusually subdued Trump offered her his wishes for a rapid recovery but also suggested that the former secretary of state's health issues were of longer standing than admitted.
"Something is going on but I just hope she gets well and gets back on the trail, and we'll be seeing her at the debate," the Republican candidate said in a phone interview with Fox News.
The unexpected turn of events barely eight weeks before the November 8 elections has turned a conservative angle of attack into a serious line of questioning about the 68-year-old Clinton's health, why it took two days to reveal the pneumonia diagnosis, and what would happen if she were forced to quit the race.
"Antibiotics can take care of pneumonia. What's the cure for an unhealthy penchant for privacy that repeatedly creates unnecessary problems?" asked the former White House aide David Axelrod on Twitter.
"We could have done better yesterday, but it is a fact that public knows more about HRC than any nominee in history," fired back Clinton's communications director Jennifer Palmieri.
But the episode has fueled fresh speculation and conspiracy theories on the internet, already awash with unsubstantiated rumors Clinton may have a brain tumor, Parkinson's or dementia. #HillarysBodyDouble was a trending topic on Twitter Monday.

The Clinton campaign must be in total panic right now. If they keep her out of sight between now and the debates, it would just fuel the speculation about how sick she really is. If they put her back out on the campaign trail in the next few days and there is another incident with the cameras rolling, it's all over for her candidacy. If she makes it to the first debate, her handlers will be on the edge of their seats all night, hoping and praying that she makes it through the debate. None of their options are good at this point.

re: “whirlwind schedule on Friday”
yeah, so when exactly on Friday did Hillary have time to visit a doctor, have a chest x-ray, and get diagnosed with pneumonia???
Or is the campaign lying about her being diagnosed on Friday??
If there are any real journalists left they’d better dig hard into her Friday activities and confirm whether or not she really was diagnosed on Friday!!??
I believe it would be normally required to have a chest x-ray available before a competent doctor in 2016 would diagnose pneumonia, or at least that’s how it works with my elderly mother who has had pneumonia several times in recent years, always with a chest x-ray to settle and confirm the diagnosis.

What the public knows about HRC is that she is one of the most hateful and hated people ever to hold public office, a serial liar, and that she is deceitful beyond belief. And these vile character traits are indeed very well known all over the planet.
Will there be debates? Trump is saying he won’t debate if there are moderators. That gives Hillary an “out”.
