A 24-year-old former substitute teacher from Iowa who was arrested in July after admitting to a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student says he had swept her off her feet with love notes scribbled on Post-Its.
Mary Beth Haglin, of Cedar Rapids, has been charged with misdemeanor sexual exploitation by a school employee in connection to her six-month tryst with a male student at Washington High School.
On Wednesday, Haglin pleaded not guilty to the charge in writing, and her trial date has been set for November 14. If convicted, she could face up to two years in prison and be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
Haglin was hired as a substitute teacher in January and was terminated in May at the conclusion of an internal investigation by school administrators. An earlier probe conducted in February had failed to prove any wrongdoing on Haglin’s part.
Both investigations have since been labelled as ‘ineffective’ by the school district and led to the resignations of three high-ranking officials, reported The Gazette.
It is believed that Haglin and the victim had been in a sexual relationship for almost the entire duration of her tenure at Washington High School.
Speaking to Inside Edition this week, the 24-year-old woman apologized for the hurt she has caused, but claimed that it was her underage lover who seduced her.
‘He would come into my classroom, grab a Post-It, write something and stick it to my desk on his way out,’ she said. One note read, ‘I love you so much, my empress.’

I had an English teacher that continually hit on me and an acquaintance of mine. She even figured out which route each of us used to walk home and would give us rides. I always declined her advances as she definitely was NOT hot.

Bingo. She is an attractive young woman. Obviously she has an education. If she is not looking for men in her own age bracket to potentially marry and start a family with, some screws are loose in her head someplace.

Several years ago a former student had the 60 required hours necessary to sub, she was 20 or 21. One of the senior baseball players began to “date” her on the sly since its illegal. They eventually got married, shes now a lawyer.
Men get accused of “thinking with their genitals.” Women do it at least as much as men.
It’s why they make such lousy bedmate choices.

She and lots of her very bright, accomplished young colleagues keep losing out to schmucks who have some connection with the local Democratic Committee or a relative on the school board.
The two are connected IMHO. You can’t hire quality individuals through such a corrupt process.
A couple of thoughts...
She is in the far upper right corner of the hot/crazy scale.
The young man will be the subject of fable-like tales, forever.
It stupid enough to have an affair with a student, but these almost always get caught by:
1. Pictures shared via the internet
2. Trysts in public places, often the school
Which leads me to...
How much of this is happening that never gets caught? If you didn’t share photos AND if you were discrete in the time and place of your encounters, you would likely never get caught.
