Pentagon Admits "Lapses In Accountability" Led To Loss Of Hundreds Of Thousands Of US Guns (Trunc)
Zero Hedge ^ | August 24, 2016 | Tyler Durden

Back in April 2016, the New York Times published an article highlighting a number of Facebook pages in the Middle East being used to sell U.S. military equipment.

A terrorist hoping to buy an antiaircraft weapon in recent years needed to look no further than Facebook, which has been hosting sprawling online arms bazaars, offering weapons ranging from handguns and grenades to heavy machine guns and guided missiles.

The Facebook posts suggest evidence of large-scale efforts to sell military weapons coveted by terrorists and militants. The weapons include many distributed by the United States to security forces and their proxies in the Middle East. These online bazaars, which violate Facebook’s recent ban on the private sales of weapons, have been appearing in regions where the Islamic State has its strongest presence.

Many of the Facebook pages have subsequently been shut down, as selling stolen U.S. military equipment to terrorist organizations technically violates Facebook's user policies. But the remnants remain...like the Facebook post below showing a row of kids shooting increasingly lower caliber weapons culminating with a young man shooting a sling-shot...adorable!

At the same time the New York Times was reporting on the Facebook sales of U.S. military weapons, a lobbying group in London known as Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), was scouring through Department of Defense records to ascertain exactly how many weapons had been given to Iraqi and Afghani troops by the U.S. military. With a string of Freedom of Information Act requests that began last year, researchers at AOAV pooled 14 years’ worth of Pentagon contract information related to rifles, pistols, machine guns and their associated attachments and ammunition, both for American troops and for their partners and proxies.

How Many Guns Did the U.S. Lose Track of in Iraq and Afghanistan? Hundreds of Thousands.

'In one of many examples, a 2007 Government Accountability Office report found that 110,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles and 80,000 pistols bought by the United States for Iraq’s security forces could not be accounted for — more than one firearm for every member of the entire American military force in Iraq at any time during the war. Those documented lapses of accountability were before entire Iraqi divisions simply vanished from the battlefield, as four of them did after the Islamic State seized Mosul and Tikrit in 2014, according to a 2015 Army budget request to buy more firearms for the Iraqi forces to replace what was lost.'

And those armies must be paid - in cash:

DOD corruption is off the scale - killing is great business...News from four days ago.

“The Pentagon failed to account for $6.5 trillion in its financial statement, a recently-recovered Inspector General’s report on the 2015 fiscal year said. It reveals the audit of the Department of Defense was “materially misstated.”

The army failed to provide “accurate, complete, timely and well-supported” documents that could have explained the use of trillions of dollars in quarterly and yearend adjustments.

The US military made $2.8 trillion in wrongful adjustments in one quarter alone in 2015, and $6.5 trillion for the year, but could not provide anything that would detail what it spent the money on.”

Countless. Loss of borders helps to improve the transportation of good and bad supplies.

Perhaps unintentionally hilarious.

Maybe Facebook makes an exception for enemies of the U.S.

Our government loses fully automatic weapons paid for by American taxpayers or gives them away to people not our friends, but wants us to surrender to them our privately purchased semi-auto firearms ...
I suppose so they can lose or give them away as well.

I don’t think that’s going to happen without bloodshed.

I was recently banned from Facebook for failure to provide government identification as to my true name, address and date of birth.

I am considering making a new troll account and naming myself Mohammed Abdul, with my location being somewhere in Iraq or Syria just to see if they will ask for the same credentials. I sincerely doubt they will.

All those stolen U.S. weapons - an accident or an ‘accident’? - was Benghazi an ‘accident’?

Well, when you have the right Muslim appointed by his superior who is seeking approval from his superiors for openness to diversity, then things like that can happen easily.

Dripping with duplicity isnt it. On one hand liberals decry guns here, on the other inject them into someone elses backyard. Nice....the Democrat party is the party of death and destruction. Wonder how many will eventually walk back over our southern border.

On another note, this article only touches on small arms. My bet is thats the tip of a hugh iceburg of weapons. In the past grenades in cartel hands were traced back to military aid to various Latin American countries. Im sure if small arms walk over our southern border grenades et all will too. This all courtesy of the dem party and gope.

You’ve got to think that the people enforcing TOU on Facebook pages that are in, say, Arabic are, well, mostly Arabic. Which means mostly Islamic. Which means Do they really care about stopping the sale of armaments? So the pages probably get shut down slowly . . .

I've been to Afghanistan twice. I can totally believe this story.

Weapons and equipment accountability is a nightmare.
