Three suspects were in custody Saturday after investigators said one of them shot a New Mexico police officer in the neck during a traffic stop, killing him, before trying to speed away.
Two of the suspects have criminal records and were wanted in a shooting last month that killed a 62-year-old man in Ohio, The Chillicothe Gazette reported.
After Friday's shooting, crews airlifted Hatch, N.M. Police Officer Jose Chavez to a hospital in El Paso, Texas where he died, according to officials.
The 33-year-old officer was a two-year veteran of the department. He had a wife and two children, KVIA reported.
The officer had just arrived at the traffic stop in Dona Ana County Friday afternoon when a passenger got out of the vehicle and fired shots, police said.

Two Ohio fugitives arrested in New Mexico after police death: media
Two men wanted in connection with the killing of a police officer during a traffic stop in southern New Mexico and the shooting last month of a man in Ohio have been detained, local media in Ohio reported.
James Nelson II and Jesse Hane were taken into custody in Doña Ana County on Friday following the death of a Hatch, New Mexico police officer who pulled them over along with a third suspect, Ohio’s Chillicothe Gazette newspaper reported.
One of the passengers got out of the Lexus they were in and shot police officer Jose Chavez, 33, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.
The suspects fled and later shot the driver of a Chevrolet Cruze at a rest stop and took his vehicle, said Kelly Jameson, spokeswoman for the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.

When I last drove through there a couple months ago on my way to the state Republican Convention, it did indeed feel and look like I was in Mexico!
Notice the names and backstory of the suspects are already news. If Dindu Nuffins or illegals did this, we wouldn’t hear nothing about their identities.
