If current trends continue, thousands of pregnant women will get infected with Zika, said Frieden. And there could be between dozens and hundreds of children with microcephaly born [there] in the next year.
The CDC estimates 25 percent of the islands population could be infected with Zika in its first year of spread there. Puerto Rican women give birth to about 32,000 babies a year.
Transferring the current rate of spread for the virus to the citizenry of greatest impact, based on proximity and travel, the CDC is projecting the strongest U.S. outbreaks in: 1.Miami Florida 2.Orlando Florida 3.Tampa Florida 4.Brownsville Texas 5.New York, New York 6.Jacksonville Florida 7.Houston Texas 8.Atlanta Georgia 9.New Orleans, Louisiana 10.Charleston, South Carolina

The doc said 'one of the best ways to protect against birth defects in your future child is get Zika now, get over it, and then you're immunized'. Same thing as a vaccination, or getting chick pox once.
I'm not recommending that ! ... just pointing out that it sounded like Zika would be no big deal without the fact that if you're pregnant or about to get pregnant in the next few weeks ... then ... problem.
Feel free to call me out on having my head up my butt ... but I DO believe that's what NPR was babbling on about the other morning, just after trashing Trump with sneery biased reporting, and just before trashing Trump with sneery biased reporting.
Good. They should aim for 100%. That way, people will get the pretty mild virus, get over it, and afterwards be immune to it. Once everyone is pretty much immune, the threat is over.
Meanwhile, be checked for it if you are planning to get pregnant or get someone pregnant.
25%! No wonder some Puerto Ricans want to hurry up and become our 51st state! “I like to be in America, everything free in America!”
Interesting. The other 75% are infected with the “no paya me debts” virus
The world always needs a joker!
Why all the worry? Obamacare will fix it.
Those microcephaly babies are going to keep the taxpayers busy.
Might be a time to re-consider DDT eh?
I’ve been saying that from the very beginning of this.
Infected or have been infected. I bet it’s the latter. I doubt all are acutely ill. Just have the antibody.
“people will get the pretty mild virus, get over it, and afterwards be immune to it.”
Post-infection immunity to different viruses varies greatly. Sometimes it is only partial; sometimes it lasts only a short time like one year. I don’t know if the specifics of Zika immunity have been pinned down.
I recently read that the number of babies being born with microcephely in South America is less than predicted. Some researchers questioned if the link between Zika and birth defect was overstated and were speculating on other factors.
The Zika infections are really not a big deal. The virus has been known for decades; never before has anyone seen microcephaly associated with it.
At about the time the infected mosquitoes started becoming a problem, Brazil started treating open water with mosquito larvacides. The poisons dumped into the water are a more likely cause of the microcephaly than the infected mosquitoes.
I would love to see a study on the teratogenic properties of the larvacide. I would bet the larvacide is responsible for the brain abnormalities, not the virus.
and then you’re immunized’. Same thing as a vaccination, or getting chick pox once.

Except with chicken pox, you carry the virus with you all your life and that’s the cause of the horrible shingles.
You don’t really know just how bad the pain can be until you have had shingles.
Once a person accepts the fact that Brazil has had the Zika virus for six decades...you have to start focusing on something else in the mix. So far, I don’t see any rocket scientists standing up and asking what changed. Unless some idiot can prove Zika evolved overnight and changed in Zika version 2.0 or something drastically different, there’s something more to this story.
95 babies from zika-infected moms have been born so far in Puerto Rico this year. All are fine.
At this point, the Puerto Ricans are the ones infecting the mosquitos.
Ha! You know? Sometimes humor may just contain truth!
No, the other 75% are up north in the NYC metro area...
