Humor and the politics of hate
National Review ^ | 8/11/16 | Kevin D Williamson

Posted on 08/11/2016 4:47:09 PM PDT by Borges

The great American humorists have something in common: hatred. H. L. Mencken and Mark Twain both could be uproariously funny and charming — and Twain could be tender from time to time, though Mencken could not or would not — but at the bottom of each man’s deep well of humor was a brackish and sour reserve of hatred, for this country, for its institutions, and for its people. Neither man could forgive Americans for being provincial, backward, bigoted, anti-intellectual, floridly religious, or for any of the other real or imagined defects located in the American character.

Isn’t this the guy who thinks post industrial towns should get busy dying? He wouldn’t understand humor if it bit him in the tuckus.

There is no national vice-principal’s office or confessional into which we can drag ourselves and shame-facedly admit that we messed up, say that we’re very sorry, and promise to do better next time. But we must nonetheless admit that we messed up, say that we’re very sorry, and promise to do better next time.

You should be sorry. You and the rest of the MSM have gone so far from a Free Press that all you can be called now are State Propagandists.

And the great majority of us are sick to death of your crap.

Well, he nailed Molly Ivans (in a satirical sense) and being from Lubbock Texas isn’t all bad. I have had the same feelings about Mark Twain for a long time. But cynicism has always been a hammer in the humorist’s tool bag and I for one can’t question their love of country because of that fact.

Williamson is trying to normalize the frothing, rabid, screaming hatred coming from the Hillary supporters into “both sides do it.”

No, both sides don’t do it, liar.

Author’s name sounded familiar so I Googled it and it
was that of a common guest on Red Eye when Gutfeld hosted
the show. Williamson added little to Red Eye and this
article follows in that tradition.
