“It’s really very simple to predict earthquakes, and anyone could do it,” Jim Berkland liked to say. “The hard part is being right.”

Berkland, a retired geologist and avid writer who grew up and lived much of his later life in Glen Ellen, died last Friday after a lifetime of predicting quakes and making headlines. He was a few days shy of his 86th birthday.

Okay, I have varied interests and one is earthquakes (due to an interest in end times prophecy) and I became acquainted with Jim Berkland many years ago and through him made many friends in the geologist and earthquake related community.

I just found out about Jim's passing and just wanted to acknowledge it and with it wish Jim God's blessings in his passing...he had a unique view on how to predict earthquakes...and I believe he was right on many issues.

God Bless Jim Berkland...a visionary in his own right...and someone who led me to many valuable web friends....

There was a big earthquake near Saipan today. We felt the shaking in Guam for 30 or 40 seconds 70 miles away

Just over the hill from me. I am up on Sonoma Mt. I bumped into him a time or two and never really knew who he was. Thanks.

I knew Jim back in the 80s when he was county geologist. I interviewed him several times. Always a fascinating man and theorist.

Back when C2CAM was listenable, I’d enjoy his appearances.

Sad news. I was a regular at syzygyjob.com for many years and a supporter. Jim was a good man. He’ll be missed.

AWWW. I spoke with him many times in the 80s when I used him as an expert witness. He loved talking about how he could predict earthquakes using the runaway pet ads in the SJ Mercury. (He was based in SJ in those days.) He plotted the number of missing pet ads and the moment he saw them tick up significantly, he was able to predict an earthquake locally. He was so enthusiastic! He was convinced that this was an important key to earthquake prediction.

RIP Jim. You took a lot of crap from a lot of jerks, and fought the good fight. I pray you’re in a much better place. You’ll be missed.
