I have heard that the idea of “laid-back Californians” goes all the way back to pre-Columbian times in that local tribes didn’t fight amongst themselves as much as in other areas of North America.

Agreed, on the whole they were less hostile than other regions The California indians were treated poorly by the Spaniards and later by the U S but many of those tribes were not saints to each other either.
