Agreed, on the whole they were less hostile than other regions The California indians were treated poorly by the Spaniards and later by the U S but many of those tribes were not saints to each other either.

Well conquered by Spain ... The rub for me is when generations later someone wants retribution ....

There were many complaints about how Stephen Kearny conducted himself after the Spaniards were finally driven out of California ....

Pretty amazing guy if you can claim him as family ?

I read an account of the expedition of Gaspar de Portolo in 1769 as he explored present day Southern California, and the natives were described as very friendly. They greeted the Spaniards, fed them, and asked them to live among the villagers. It was surprisingly tranquil.

Some South Pacific Islanders even thru in a few young women ... For the new world discoverers it seemed to get better the further west they went.

Ah the good old days

The Dancing Queen was totally unacceptable.

No, my “handle” is from my hometown in NJ, named for General Philip Kearny (a Union general killed at the Battle of Chantilly, Virginia) in the Civil War.

FWIW, Mexico was paid for those territories; they might not have wanted to sell, but they did - they weren’t seized outright.

Phillip Kearny was inspired into service by his uncle general Stephen Kearny.

Yes I’m well aware of the Treaty of Hildago where we purchased Calif territory for $ 25,000,000. The original price had been 30,000,000 before the Mexican War.

a great time in American history...... unlike today

He had an interesting career; when he died he was minus an arm (and learned to ride with the reins in his teeth to keep his sword arm free)...

Holy Smokes that’s a tough situation in those days. The life of a one armed soldier... Just read a great article on him. Lost the arm early in his career — wow. amazing what he accomplished after that.

So sad that many of the union and Confederate guys who served together in the Mexican War then fought each other as enemies in the Civil War. Looks like he and his uncle fought together in the Mex War. Have read several good books on the subject but again had never draw the connection between the 2 Kearnys

See they stopped the civil War battle of Chantilly for both sides to honor the falling of Phillip ....Robert E. Lee who had only been a Captain in The Mex War sent a letter of condolence to Kearny’s Family. Looks like they had been friends in Mexico together ?

http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/UnionLeaders/p/American-Civil-War-Major-General-Philip-Kearny.htm

Quite a story .... The One Armed Devil !

I was not familiar that there were other distinguished Kearny’s w military careers.

If you have not followed much about his uncle Stephen’s adventures he is a historical figure worth reading about too.

He was similarly restless like Phillip it seems and sometimes took action ahead of actual orders coming.

Fascinating history; Stephen was born in Newark NJ. Is this tidbit from Wikipedia true?

“While moving his forces through the native Pueblos town of Embudo north of Sante Fe, Kearny oversaw the burning of a church packed with locals who were inevitably burned alive in the fire.”

Yikes; if it isn’t it should be removed...

I never ran across that episodebut but read quite a bit about how forceful he became when he was assigned temporary control of California.

The US government eventually sent John C Fremont to relieve him of duty and Stephen refused to step down causing quite a problem for his career later

He was definately not afraid to use fear to set the stage for what it was going to be like under his leadership.

Yesterday when I was reading about Philip I ran across a biography on Stephen that I’m probably going to have to order now.

So maybe you should buy a biography on Philip if there is one and then we’ll swap books when we’re both done.

The book on Stephen got 4 1/2 stars on Amazon so is probably a good read. Going to order today and will soon see if they mention the part about the church
