Clinton Accuses Obama of Plagiarism in 2008 Speech
CBS News ^ | February 19, 2009 | Solly Kane

Presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has come under scrutiny for a speech he gave Saturday in Milwaukee and its similarities to a speech by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.

The website www.youtube.com has a video showing the similarities of the two speeches, and both campaigns, Obama's and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton's, D-N.Y., have responded to the accusations of plagiarism.

Obama's speech Saturday sounded similar to a speech given by Patrick in his 2006 campaign for governor, according to the video.

"Don't tell me words don't matter! 'I have a dream.' Just words. 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.' Just words. 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself.' Just words, just speeches," Obama said in his speech.

Patrick used many of the same phrases in his speech.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal'-just words. Just words. 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself'-just words. 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country'-just words. 'I have a dream'-just words," Patrick said in 2006.

Patrick said in a statement he and Obama are friends, and said the allegations were just attacks by Clinton. Patrick announced his endorsement Obama in October 2007.

Howard Wolfson, Clinton campaign communications director, said in a conference call with reporters that the speech hurts Obama's credibility. Dan Leistikow, Obama's Wisconsin campaign spokesperson, said in an e-mail Patrick and Obama often share strategies. According to Leistikow, Clinton has borrowed Obama campaign phrases.

"It's a curious charge coming from Senator Clinton, who actually has used Senator Obama's language herself," Leistikow said.

UW-Madison professor of political science Charles Franklin said he predicted the controversy would not have an impact on Tuesday's Wisconsin primary.

Franklin said accusations of plagiarism in the past have hurt other campaigns, namely U.S. Sen. Joe Biden's, D-Del., 1988 presidential bid.

"The difference was, the Biden case came up very early in the process while people, and more importantly the press, were still forming their opinions about him as a candidate," Franklin said.

"...have responded to the accusations of plagiarism."

How can either hillary or obama say anything at all --when they're drowning together in an unflushed toilet.

Yes. Of course! From Hillary’s perspective, why plagiarize when you can just straight-off lie your ass off to start with. I mean, if you’re really the king (or queen) you are supposed to have a quisling media that won’t question the lie in the first place, aren’t you?

I’m a YUGE worrier with a terrible temper and even I dont give a #### about this non story.

All we did was get a lot of blue collar male votes yesterday and Melania looked and talked great.

Do you think ONE person is thinking “well, i was gonna vote Trump but now i can’t. That was bad last night.”

Come on. We are giving attention it doesn’t deserve.

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

And plagiarism is flattery, of a sort.

But flattery is the very height of insincerity. It is a fawning effort to gain approval in the eyes of a perceived superior, in hopes of expected reprieve from demeaning treatment.

Taking and repeating the words of another, with or without attribution, as it fits the situation, is a way of either exhibiting far greater honesty, or of mocking the very hollowness with which the original speaker delivered the message.

“We are giving attention it doesn’t deserve”

This is actually a typical Trump lemons to lemonade scenario. The lifted phrases were minor...everybody knows it was a speechwriter screw up and has nothing to do with her character. Nobody will care in November.

But what has the news cycle been all morning...and likely all day until the next speaker says something ‘outrageous’? Melania’s speech. HRC was on some show last night, to compete with Melania’s speech...and I’ve honestly already forgotten which show, heard nothing about it, seen no clips from it etc. Instead its all Trump, all the time.

And the networks are showing side by side videos of Melania and Mooch...which is quite a contrast.

And also, counter stories are reminding the sheeple that Barry lifted speech lines from Deval Patrick (or else Axelrod recycled them)...and of course Biden actually deliberately plagiarized entire sections of speeches from a Brit politician.

Biden is so sleazy lol.

What man still breathing heard a word that Melania said?? :)

And her next to the beasts!?!?

We got a lot more male blue collar votesr last night )

And it is good that the other speech thefts are being reported.

Melania is nothing but an asset. Ivanka will be too

“I accuse you of murder.”

If that wasn’t enough, I accuse her of selling access to State Department secrets to enemies of the US through the Clinton Foundation. Her husband sold missile technology to the Chinese. Traitors, both.

Hey, it’s the seriousness of the charge, you know.

Hillary plagiarized uncountable others when she swore "I don't remember." or "I can't recall." literally hundreds of times.

"Hillary Clinton's Legacy of Scandal"

"Do you recall that while testifying before congressional investigators as first lady,
she answered "I don't know" or "I don't remember" 250 times?"
