Hope can you assert at this point in time that the states claimed at the time they didn’t want the land in question? Basically, as I see it, the federal “taking” of the large percentage of the land within a Western state, was “bribe” the state paid to the Federal Government as the price for statehood. It was simply theft.

I completely agree with you, I was just speculating on his reasoning. I want all of Nevada returned to the state and opened up to mining and hunting, horse back riding, hiking, etc.

It’s a fine line. We have people fighting Comstock Mining now who have discovered a rich vein in Virginia City because they don’t want mining to destroy the land. Virginia City, for those who don’t know, is riddled with mines, tunnels under every inch of it and rusted mining equipment all over.

Comstock does a great job of restoring the land, it’s the enviromentalists who somehow think now that Virginia City should become pristine, back to nature. They overlook the fact that tourists come from all over to see Virginia City and love seeing a working mine along with it.

Fedgov was not the orwellian nightmare it is today, either. And federalism wasn’t such a massive problem to citizens and the states to the point it as usurped powers not explocitly given toit but taken fromthe dfates and the people, 9th and 10th amendment issues.

I understand how we purchased, and in other cases, won territory. Doesnt change my viewpoint. You cant have two classes of states, because the colonies and other states not carved out of huge purchases do not have significant portions of their states federalized, off limits and not under their own jurisdictions.

My wife was born in Fallon, and grew up in Las Vegas. Her father was degreed in Agriculture and worked originally for the State of Nevada before going into businss of a differnt nature. That business is now one of the largest non-gambling businesses that’s headquartered in Nevada. If I mentioned the name you woild know what I mean.

So the fact that thousands of extremely hard working families chose to homestead, improve and cultivate land in some areas and opted not to in others means nothing to you?

You have an excellent point. Sorry, I forgot California is the leader in leftism and is actually been the chief exporter of it to other states which is why the fed gov is infected with it.

In our state, ND, the fed gov is actually more restrictive compared to state rules.

Several years ago an air force kid came to visit when I was building a boat ramp on a lake. He asked to see the enviro impact study. There was none so he went to the county to file a complaint. He told me they never knew what he was talking about. Talk about one pissed off person.

Actually, yes there is, literally. Take hydraulic gold mining in California where the land was literally washed away.

Take clear cutting forests for the sake of lumber.

Take strip mining where no reclamation was required.

New let’s talk about lands under lakes. Take back when industrial wastes from Chicago was allowed to go into the big lakes. This is just one example.

It’s human nature for many people to just crap in their own nest.

I think the deeper issue is not the federal govt owning the land, it’s who we have elected as a peoples to be in charge of the fed govt.

I agree all lands not used as military bases and govt offices should be signed over to the states. But then we still have a problem of lefties running many states.

In the 1800’s it was “Westward Ho!”. Today it’s “Leftward Ho!”.

We need to stop that or the state or fed gov will seize whatever lands are in private ownership right now. I think this happened in Russia when the commies took over, right?

So we need the Federal Government to be our “minder?” Sorry, NO SALE. There are other ways to assure the protection of our lands without making them “off limits” to our citizens. BTW, the abuses you list are in the main, ancient history.

No, just like Trump says, these “deals” need to be renegotiated. The Federal Government today has no business holding on to as much as 85% of a state’s land. The Federal Government uses their “hold” on these lands to promulgate political agendas (like stopping mineral exploration). We’ve already set aside places that need protection from intrusion due to their special nature. We can’t continue to grow and develop with the heavy foot of the Federal Government on the brake pedal.
