Mike Pence on the Issues: Immigration, Foreign Policy, Guns, the Economy
nytimes.com ^ | KATIE SHEPHERD

Mike Pence, who has served as governor of Indiana since 2013, will be Donald J. Trump’s running mate on the Republican presidential ticket. Mr. Pence, a staunch social conservative, was elected in 2000 to the United States House of Representatives, where he served in the leadership of the party. Here is a look at his stand on important issues.

Immigration

Mr. Pence is opposed to granting amnesty for people who have come to the United States without authorization. He has supported increased border security measures, strict enforcement of laws prohibiting unauthorized residents from working in the United States and a government-run guest worker program that would place prospective immigrants with employers who cannot find American workers to fill open jobs. Earlier this year, he sought to bar the resettlement of Syrian refugees in his state.

Gay Rights

Mr. Pence, who has supported numerous legislative efforts to ban same-sex marriage in Indiana, was at the center of the national debate over so-called religious freedom laws that critics said could make it easier for businesses to refuse service to gay couples. As a congressman, Mr. Pence opposed federal funding that would support treatment for people suffering from H.I.V. and AIDS, unless the government simultaneously invested in programs to discourage people from engaging in same-sex relationships. He also resisted changes to hate-crime laws that that would have included acts against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and he opposed the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” a Clinton administration policy that allowed closeted L.G.B.T. people to serve in the military.

I got the wrong impression, obviously that he was kind of soft from his “heavens no” comment when asked if he expected all that backlash from the religious law.

I’m used to Christie and Rudy and Trump and forgot that you dont have to have a sharp tongue and an angry tone to be effective.

I wish him well.

Pence is better than Newt or Christie, both of whom could be useful elsewhere, they are bright and talented people.

We MUST win this election.
It may well be our last chance.

I too believe this is our last chance to save this country for our children and grandchildren. If Hillary gets in the USA is gone.

He is a little soft. He did back down when the Gaystapo barked.
Trump will set policy. Pence will back him up. I hope. They have some differences on trade and immigration.

I think Pence is pretty solid. The fact that he opposed Boner speaks very highly of him in my book.

The kind of formula Pence is hoping to effect, apparently sounds to Trump like part of the formula of “making America great again.”

Conservatives really piled on Pence when politics forced him to backtrack on his religious rights initiative in Indiana, but perhaps they were too quick to punish a man whose divinely backed hour for that kind of thing had not yet come.

Getting Trump’s backing is going to make a yuuuuuge amount of difference in how much force a similar initiative will have at the Washington level.

And the selection of Pence will unite the party.

Get ready for a rip-roaring convention next week.

The alliance with Trump will help. If the Donald Bulldog starts to bark about religious freedom, maybe Pence will get more respect this time around.

Of course ultimately the Lion of Judah (a biblical name for God) is going to have to roar to make it happen (to keep up the metaphor).

Does it matter what Pence’s stand on any issues is? He is or should be making a commitment to support Donald Trump. His positions should now be Trump’s positions.

Ceremonial position anyway. If Libs are concerned about him, it means they have plans of him becoming president for some reason...

Let um weasel around it if they want. If they hoot enough at authorization suddenly they will find themselves the target of, er, “unauthorized” things.

Trump seems to be treating this like any business acquisition. Does it add something to his portfolio that he wants? The answer seems to be, yes.

This is the Donald we knew less about. We thought we were dealing with an utter libertine, in our more paranoid moments. Instead he is a man of a checkered past who believes in making whatever effort he can to get it right, today.
