Cleveland's police chief said Wednesday he would prefer that people not bring firearms to the Republican National Convention that kicks off next week but said it is legal to do so.
"It's the law in this state and as police chief, I'm bound to uphold the law in this state," Police Chief Calvin Williams said at a news conference Tuesday.
More than 5,000 police officers are expected to be on hand when the Republican convention begins Monday.
The party's controversial candidate, Donald Trump, is expected to be nominated at the convention, and the city is bracing for protests.
Three hundred police officers on bikes will be patrolling, and part of their job will be separating potentially hostile groups from one another, a police official confirmed.
There will be two rings of security outside the convention. No guns will be allowed in a secure zone inside the convention site and right outside it, an area controlled by the Secret Service.
In the larger area outside the event, guns will be permitted in accordance with Ohio state law, but other items including knives, paintball guns, and umbrellas with sharp tips, will be prohibited, officials said.

Gun war?
Well actual militia-heads would do well to show up there to guard the place.
“Gun war?”
Dems wet dream.
I hope Trump stays behind bulletproof glass.
That’s mighty white of him.

“I hope Trump stays behind bulletproof glass.”
They control the number of guests, I think. I’d give out 1k tickets to the D’s and put 4k armed R guests seated around each one on each side.
I'm all for guns but this is the wrong place and wrong time for it. I predict that the Secret Service will step in and say "no guns at the convention".
As an avid duck-hunter with a black lab, that there is funny. Thanks for posting.
Gonna be a security nightmare with all the race-baiting scum that is going TO BE PAID to show up and start trouble.
breaking news— police chief says he will follow the law...
Every day, more and more people become 2nd Amendment supporters. With this convention, the Republicans can show the American people that they are Pro 2nd Amendment.
The “Bikers for Trump” will be a lot of security...
At a minimum, loser protesting should not even be allowed within a mile radious of the convention center in order for hotel guests to get to and from their hotel in safety as well as be able to visit restaurants.
Maybe that is what they intend to do. Tell them you can protest over there and only over there on the concrete slab ensuring no tax paying motorists are stopped from their legal right to move about as they wish, in other words, no blocking streets.
There is a lot they could do to minimize the protests. They could even set up websites in real time showing the only areas protesters are allowed so that convention goers, employees to local establishments etc can go about their normal lives and prevent police officers from being harmed.
The Secret Service should not allow any guns within a 1/4 mile of the convention site.
Hope the entire Texas delegation will be carrying.
*5 mile radius should be a safe zone. Anywhere people have businesses including small business owners should be quarantined off. They pay taxes and shouldn’t have to worry about their patrons, themselves or their employees having to worry about their own safety.
How is it that those that espouse and broadcast that they are there to physically harm others be allowed that close to the convention center. Give them a concrete slab to mingle on or something. Stay off private property.
I posted pics of some Anonymous members carrying “modern sporting rifles” at the Dayton, ohio Trump rally a few months ago. It didn’t seem to be a problem but that was well before Dallas. This feels like more than a peaceful statement. these fers are looking for a way to shut down the election. Their correspondance has confirmed this prior to Dallas. they want to give Obama an excuse for martial law. Not all of them but some of them.
