The attempted robbery happened on a Saturday night at Taste of Egypt takeaway shop in Christchurch.
Ahmed was working alone, preparing a large chicken souvlaki for a customer. The street was quiet, the other kebab shops had closed an hour before and Ahmed was tired and wanted to go home.
On the 26-second video an armed, masked person approaches the counter at 10.38pm. Ahmed gives him a cursory glance and appears to smile. He sees the pistol in his hand and decides to ignore it.
Ahmed, who emigrated from Egypt to New Zealand 20 years ago and has a degree in agricultural engineering, calmly continues preparing the chicken souvlaki and avoids looking at the man. The wannabe robber shuffles his feet and holds the gun loosely in his palm, seemingly confused by Ahmeds insouciance.
After holding out a package to a customer, Ahmed simply leaves the front counter. I turned my back on the robber and walked to the kitchen to call the police. I told myself, If he shoots me at least my body will be further away, and the gun shot wont be as serious as shooting me at close range in my heart or my head.
Defeated by Ahmeds refusal to panic, the armed man quickly leaves the shop.
The robber was very confused by my behaviour. He wanted to scare me but I wasnt scared, so I took away his power, said Ahmed.

Leave the politics and history aside -- this is a funny bit :)
in chgo - robber would shoot you for disrespecting his intention
When I was much younger, an armed robber came to the night window where I worked.
It was near Halloween and he was wearing a mask. Might have been a Nixon mask.
I didn’t even notice the gun right away.
I just busted a gut laughing
Then I saw the gun and busted ass into the back room and waited for him to leave.
Maybe he wasn’t even a real robber but a Halloween prank
I’ve cheated death many times.
I think God looks down and says well, bless your heart because most of my near death were from bad decisions and sheer stupidity.
I hear He has a soft spot for fools like me. (Thank you)

Wrongo buddy!
Years ago when I was in telecom testing we used buy scads of banana plug connectors/adapters to BNC etc. from a company called Pomona. Is that factory there?
Pomona was the name of a Roman godess so the Pomona factory could be anywhere for all I know.
One of the main factories of general Dynamics used to be in Pomona, Ca. It's all closed and moved on now but in it's day it made the Pomona valley quite an affluent area in the 50s and 60s.
After the watts riots of the mid 60s HUD bought up blocks of houses and relocated hundreds of families of welfare receiving blacks from Watts and other riot effected areas. It didn't take too long to ruin whole entire areas of Pomona and turn them into gang and drug infested suburban ghettos. Places where you wouldn't want to be caught dead at night.
They still are to this day but most of the welfare blacks have now been relocated to other So Cal areas. Pomona is now inhabited largely by spanish speaking immigrants and it's been a high crime area for decades.
Pomona used to be a very beautiful city.... Not so much anymore. I only go there when they make me show up for jury duty.
