AK-47 also refers to the semi-auto civilian version, which is what is meant.

Select fire version would likely cost over $10K, and isn’t illegal, anyway.

You can buy guns through the mail or the interweb. As long as you pick it up at an FFL dealer and fill out the ATF 4473 form and wander around while they place the call and wonder what else you can buy without winding up in the doghouse, then pays your money and a small fee.

Not all AK-47s are fully automatic. Most are semi-annual. They can only be fired during odd-numbered years or on days ending with the letter `Y’.

Semi Auto/Exchange took place in a parking lot.

Besides, the nice lady on the TV news said it was one of those double shot rifles.

In the USA, the colloquial usage, even among serious gun folk, of the tem “AK47” refers to the semiautomatic version (unless full auto is explicitly specified or a jurisdiction/situation legalizing it is understood).

And yes, the death scene photos clearly show the “sniper” had an AK47-pattern rifle with black plastic furniture.

That this has to be explained to you is annoying. Brief posts on a casual discussion board are not expected to have encyclopedic peer reviewed completeness and accuracy.

You have been around long enough to know better than this, unless you are just trying to picking a fight. You know that a least half of reports of "an AK-47", even on Free Republic is wrong because so many have no idea what that means. You certainly know that the military version of the AK-47 is an automatic weapon, but over 90% of so called AK-47 rifles in this country are fully legal semi-automatic version. Moreover, anyone who has been paying attention know that the reports of an AK-47 or a SKS in the hands of the shooter were quite wrong as the weapon recovered at the scene was a Saiga AK-74, a semiautomatic rifle usually chambered for 5.45mm, not 7.62 as found in the AK-47.

Of course, we do not know what weapon was involved in the transaction at Target was the same weapon used for the shootings, but you certainly know enough information to make the dramatic assertions that you threw out there. That's just stupid. I have bought weapons through the internet, they just ship it to a local FFL dealer, I fill out the paperwork and I walk out with my perfectly legal weapon. I can skip this step if I am buying from someone in Kansas. I can also buy a fully automatic weapon if I get the proper paperwork and pay for the tax stamp. That's incredibly costly, but it can be done legally. I think that you know that as I'm sure that you know the law. But, your comments are stupid. Are you working for Obama or the DNC?
