(Reuters) - Two bailiffs were shot and killed inside a courthouse in St. Joseph in southwest Michigan on Monday and law enforcement officers then killed the shooter, Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said.

"At about 2:25 we had a disturbance on the third floor of the courthouse. A person has shot two bailiffs, they are both deceased, and a deputy sheriff who is at the hospital right now being treated in the emergency room," Bailey said in a brief news conference.

"The suspect has been shot and killed," he added. He said the death of his friends was "terrible."

The suspect was an in-custody inmate who took a gun off a law enforcement officer and began shooting, ABC affiliate WZZM reported. Bailey said it was not clear how the suspect got the weapon.

The shootings of the bailiffs and the deputy came four days after four Dallas police officers and one Dallas transit police officer were killed by a sniper who claimed to be motivated by police use of lethal force against African-Americans.

St. Joseph is a town on the shores of Lake Michigan, across the lake from Chicago.

The wounded sheriff's deputy and several civilians also injured in the shooting are being treated at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, spokeswoman Jessica Hines said by telephone. She declined to detail their condition.

Buildings in the area were put on lockdown after the shooting, according to media reports.

"MSP (Michigan State Police) has secured the scene at the Berrien County courthouse and started its investigation into the shooting that occurred this afternoon," Governor Rick Snyder said in a Tweet.

If the police didn’t have guns then the gun couldn’t have been used against them...right?

Someone dropped the ball here big-time. Usually, suspects in court have their hands shackled in front of them and there are other security measures to prevent this very occurrence from happening.

Do we even know why he was in court or what charges he was facing?

Was it a violent crime?

Whatever the case, he obviously became a combatant in the war on police.

I sure hope the bailiff who compromised their firearm isn't a 5'1" female 'charity hire' or I'm gonna be pissed. If you're open carrying and not a tad paranoid and vigilant at ALL times around other people ESPECIALLY CRIMINALS than you should not be serving in that capacity.

BTW, was this perp being escorted and not at all restrained prior to his attack?

I had a student once who was going back to school after retiring as a prison guard at the local juvie. He told me that the guards did not carry guns for the very reason you give, because if one of the little monsters he was grading got ahold of the gun, it would be bad, very bad.

Berrien County Court most likely covers Benton Harbor, just across the st. Joe river from the town of St. Joe.

The difference is truly black and white.
Benton Harbor aka Benton Harlem. Looked like a war zone in the mid 80s and nothing’s changed but more residents.

Hard to believe a bailiff lost their firearm to a prisoner unless they weren’t using a level III retention holster.

If the police didn’t have guns then the gun couldn’t have been used against them...right?As insane as this sounds I would prefer the bailiffs not to have weapons so long as they are in a secure area that all persons have went through metal detectors. I would also like to have very well trained police with weapons in the same area, in plain cloths and with weapons. The bailiffs can use a night stick and if everything goes to hell a cop with a gun will be there to make it right.

From the account I heard, the gun was wrestled away from a Deputy, not a Bailiff. The perp was fighting with all three of them.
