Donald Trump's Dream Veep Is Newt Gingrich
Time ^ | July 5, 2016 | David Lane

Posted on 07/06/2016 7:31:46 AM PDT by newgeezer

The former House Speaker brings experience and still terrifies Democrats

Even nearly 20 years since he departed Congress, Newt Gingrich is still the most feared Republican in America. ...

The current Republican leadership is an unimpressive lot. They seem to be placeholders waiting for principled leaders like the former Speaker of the House to emerge. President Obama's hijacking of the constitutional power of the legislative branch—without cost or pain—would never have happened under a Gingrich-led Congress. ...

Republicans across the spectrum agree that Newt would be Donald Trump's best asset on the campaign trail this fall and a seasoned point-man in a Trump administration. ...

The former Speaker, one of the most innovative and formidable politicians in America, is a Churchillian figure. That kind of selection by Mr. Trump would, first, telegraph the caliber of people that he plans to bring to his administration; second, lend insight into the sort of selection he plans to make for Supreme Court Justices and third, show the type that Trump would elevate in military leadership. ...

And yes, Newt is not perfect. But, as former Texas Governor Rick Perry said of Newt and perfection in his concession speech for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, "who among us is?" Perry is right; he echoes John 8:7: "The one sinless among you, let him cast the first stone."

In March of 2007 Newt admitted to adultery in an interview with Dr. James Dobson, during a Focus on the Family broadcast. "I've gotten on my knees and sought God's forgiveness," he said. ... ...

Since one of the premier responsibilities of the VP is to campaign for the party and to take down the opponent, Newt's political skill and historical insight would be a nightmare for Hillary Clinton.

...

I'm pulling for Newt.

David Lane is the founder of the American Renewal Project, which seeks to have 1,000 pastors run for public office in 2016-2018.

I've met him and seen him in action. If he's okay with Newt Gingrich, so am I.

Chief of Staff, not VP. All the upside, none of the downside (age, marital history).

None of the people being announced as possible VP’s will be Trump’s choice. He’s letting the press have their typical dog and pony show in speculating who his pick is.

Well now we know who the establishment wants Trump to pick.

Time magazine used to be owned by the Rockefellers. Not sure anymore who owns it.

All the upside Not quite. For one, he wouldn't be the one crushing Hillary's VP in nationally-televised debates.

none of the downside (age, marital history).

Anyone who can't accept Newt's history probably can't stomach The Donald's either.

David Lane is not the establishment. Far from it.

Time just happened to print his opinion piece.

Chief of Staff, not VP.

Newt would make a horrible Chief of Staff (CoS). CoF is a workaholic, make the train run on time position. Newt is not a play by the rules workaholic. Newt is an out of the box idea man, some of his ideas are genius, and some of his ideas are moronic. Newt would make an excellent VP to Trump, he knows DC inside and out and as a former speaker of the House he knows how to get Trump agenda thru congress. Trump might not pick Newt, but he could not do much better than Newt as VP.

Not Gingrich... he’s a “target rich” environment. Trump needs a minority conservative like Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke, Allen West... someone like that. Who can speak to the Democrat failure with minorities.

This is cracking me up. I mean, I like Newt and everything ... especially his hairdo ... but he was a rising politician with a great future when I was a svelte single girl. Since I’m about to be 50, that means Newt is way, way in the past.

Newt could be the Pied Piper of conservatism. Cruz would be better as he awaits a SCOTUS appointment in Trumps 2nd term. Undoable.

Anyone who can't accept Newt's history probably can't stomach The Donald's either.

While the old ticket balancing is generally obsolete, a bit of contrast between the president and VP in personal style is usually a good thing.

Oddly, as a Catholic I accept the possibility that Gingrich may not have been in a validly sacramental marriage before Callista (subject for another thread). He did go through the process, at least upon his conversion. Donald's I am not so sure about, though his faith treats the notion of deivorce quite differently. Six marriages between two men certainly isn't a plus, even though I have no grievance against Melania.

For one, he wouldn't be the one crushing Hillary's VP in nationally-televised debates.

Gingrich has the occasional flame-outs in debates, which cost him (and us) dearly in 2012.
