The best summer job in Denver might be diving at Casa Bonita
Denver Post ^ | June 29 2016 | Bethany Ao

A spellbound hush fell over Casa Bonita’s lunch crowd as 20-year-old Georgia Pullis, one of the restaurant’s cliff divers, took her place at the rocky ledge over the iconic 30-foot waterfall.

Dressed in a striped swimsuit with water dripping down her back, Pullis took a deep breath before she launched into a graceful layout back somersault dive. She surfaced to the delighted cheers of the guests. As Pullis climbed out of the pool, diners went back to their burritos and tacos. But they had just witnessed something remarkable.

Casa Bonita, the only Mexican restaurant where you can stuff your face with chiles rellenos and watch someone juggle flaming torches before performing a dive at the same time, is one of Denver’s most recognizable landmarks. After opening in 1974 — and given a boost by an episode of “South Park” — the restaurant is in its 41st year of business. Along with the divers, who have been performing since the restaurant debuted, customers also come for the famous sopapillas drenched in honey, the “gunfights” and the trouble-making gorilla.

Been there, saw that. the food is only a stage or two above any generic Mexican restaurant you can find anywhere in the states. The cliff diving is mildly entertaining, though.Denver does have quite a few people of the brown persuasion there, so the authentic food is hit or miss.

The Aquarium is much better, food-wise and show-wise.

Maybe true. But if they are still doing well with all that, and not sucking on the govt teat for anything, then good for them.

Agreed.... Frankly the only way I would eat there is if someone else was paying the bill and insisted on it

Raising the Mexican flag on your table reminds of Panchos Mexican restaurant in Texas. Refills w/o the entertainment.

It’s a good place to go if you take the kids to the Denver area for vacation. I know my kids liked it 20 years ago but I don’t feel a strong need to go back.

Norm MacDonald:

There are only two ways to finish in cliff diving. Grand Champion, or Stuff on a Rock.

I went to the one in Tulsa when it first opened. Lines out the door! Ten years later lines still out the door, waterfall, strolling musicians, watched the sopapilla maker work, like a well lit cave inside. Could easily get lost if there was a fire.
A few years later I noticed some of the foods were prepared from frozen products as they were still cold inside.
Last time I went it was a shadow of it’s former self. bland food, no sopapillas, a real dud. Haven’t been back in years.
But then, that was Tulsa.

There’s actually a restaurant in the mountains outside of Puerto Vallarta that is the original for this. The movie Predator was filmed there. I think it’s called El Eden now but used to be called something else.

The food is not great, but you don’t go there for the food. Its a Mexican Disneyland crammed into a strip mall. I took family from Los Angeles and they were amazed by it.

We went there once because we saw it on South Park. The kids had fun finding the little South Park stuffed toys they put up high in places. They took pictures of them. The food was so terrible I complained to a manager about it and he said there was nothing he could do about it. Everyone going in, must purchase a meal.. It’s mandatory. It was neat to see it once, but we wouldn’t go back.
