Businesses that ask a job applicant about his or her criminal history during the hiring process could be fined and forced to pay the applicant up to $500 under a new law being considered by city leaders.
A Los Angeles City Council committee backed a plan Tuesday to penalize businesses that weed out applicants based on criminal convictions.
The rules are part of a law under consideration by the council aimed at giving former convicts a better shot at obtaining employment.
The Ban the Box ordinance, approved in concept last year by the council, bans private employers with 10 or more workers from asking questions related to an applicants criminal history before a conditional offer of employment has been made.
Employers also have to strip criminal history questions from job applications under the proposed law. The box refers to check box indicating a conviction on an application.
Exemptions for employers in the child care or law enforcement industry are allowed under the ordinance.
There’s really no need to ask any more.
The Internet tells all................................
We are so done.
I guess they think there aren’t enough reasons for businesses to somewhere else. They should just make LA a “business free zone” then they won’t need to worry about making additional laws to get rid of businesses.
Exactly.
An employer can hire an agency that specializes in background searches.
Let's take it to the nth degree......
I'm opening a factory. The penal system (unbeknownst to me) sends me 20 ex cons.
I hire 10 of them.
Little did I know that they began using my trucks to ship drugs and guns.
Guess what happened to all my trucks and my business when one dude finally got caught.
You got that right! YOU are an acomplice...You go to jail and THEY go looking for another job!
Yep, you would be surprised how many people post stupid stuff on social media and then complain they cant find a job.
This is really a good law—in principle. However, who is going to take responsibility for the recidivist who loots the till or rapes another employee or customer? There really are people who don’t want to lead a straight life with the square johns.
You can’t just force companies into accepting people without any knowledge about their backgrounds and potential for future crimes. Sex criminals are especially at risk of recidivism. So how do you make the program financially neutral?
The city or government who passes this law should take legal responsibility for the actions of those who get into jobs and return to crime. They could have a criminal register for the program and figure out a way to insure any financial crimes he commits and a further financial recompense to those who are injured or have psychic trauma.
The only way I would go to Mexifornia/LA LA land is at the head of an armored column, with the intent of killing everyone I encountered.
Crimes? Hell, we eliminate more people over what we find on Pipl, Twitter or Facebook.
“Businesses that ask a job applicant about his or her criminal history during the hiring process could be fined and forced to pay the applicant up to $500 under a new law being considered by city leaders.”
For a lot of businesses, $500 would be a small price to pay not to hire someone who would be trouble! This is just another way to raise revenue.
Hire an agency? Heck, you can just Google the person’s name and address and get a wealth of info just from your computer!
Most state and local LEO’s post the arrest records and mug shots of arrestees since the late 90’s.
Want to be surprised? Google YOUR OWN NAME!
Want to have FUN?........Google YOUR FRIEND’S NAMES!....................
Whats ‘Pipl’?.....................
Arrest records are freely available to the public from most State and Local LEO’s websites. All you need is name and address...................
At least an employer could still do a background check, but will they?
Are potential LA City employees queried if they have a criminal record?
Are City Hall hires asked that ?
Right, they are going to fine Amphenol or BAE, HAHAHA
Never mind that; imagine the lawsuit you’ll face when a convict employee kills a co-worker...
The same government that prevents you from doing your due diligence will award the victim’s family millions.
