“It Shattered It Pretty Good,” Woman Claims Congressman’s Campaign Sign Damaged Her Car

An Oklahoma woman is furious after she said a campaign sign damaged her vehicle.

"As you can see, it shattered it pretty good," said Dawn Byram.

Byram was driving back from a friend’s house near 164th and Pennsylvania Ave. on Sunday afternoon when something came flying toward her SUV.

"I guess the wind has picked up a little bit and, all of a sudden, the Steve Russell sign is coming right at me and hit my windshield," she said.

The damage is going to cost her about $250, which is lower than her insurance deductible, meaning she has pay for it out-of-pocket.

"It just really bothered me, because I hate all the signs anyway, because they're just trash. And, then, they're illegal along the roadsides," she said.

Oklahoma City officials said signs that are placed in a right-of-way are illegal, adding that crews take down about 1,000 signs a week.

However, insurance agents said the damage will not be covered, because it is considered an 'act of God.'

"The issue wasn't where it was placed. The issue is how it got to her front window, and it was the wind," said Daniel Chavez, an insurance agent at Auto Insurance Center.

Byram reached out to Russell's campaign about the situation but hasn't heard back.

“You know, I don't know that they would do anything, because I guess anyone could call and claim that kind of thing. But, I know they have volunteers to put signs out, but there's a certain responsibility too if you have signs that are illegally placed," Chavez said.

But, there could be hope.

"It doesn't mean I can't go to them and ask them to make a payment or pay for that, and there's a chance they might if they want a vote. It may be a good idea," Chavez said.

"It's just really annoying that you're out $250 when you're not at fault for anything and you know exactly what caused it," Byram said

Campaign signs are an ugly blight after the election is over.
That unexpected $250.00 bill might mean the difference of eating way less food for two weeks.
This is a non-partisan issue. All the signs litter the country for many months afterwards.

Steve Russell is Republican. Oh those evil Republicans! They throw their signs at innocent peoples’ cars.

If this had been a hillary sign, there would be no boohoo article like this.

As I have said before about insurance companies: They will do their absolute damnedest to NOT pay a claim. “Act of G_d”, huh? What a convenient cop-out phrase.

A guy backed into me in the grocery store lot. We both happened to have the same insurance company, and when I sent in the estimates for repair, they claimed it was a 50/50 fault situation, and I had to pay my full deductible plus half the bill. This in spite of the fact I had TWO witnesses that saw the whole thing.

The estimate to fix the minor damage, plus repair an unrelated paint chip would have come to more than I paid for the car. This is AFTER I paid the deductible!

They’re more than happy to take my premium, but heaven forfend their living up to their side of the contract.

I loathe insurance companies.

USAA gave me no trouble at all paying for the damage after a kamikaze deer jumped in front of my truck.
