Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness has called for a referendum on a united Ireland following the EU referendum result.
Speaking to the national Irish broadcaster RTE, Mr McGuinness said the British government has a "democratic imperative" to call a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should leave the United Kingdom and unite with the Irish Republic.

Oh boy.
I recall all British nuke subs are based out of Scotland:
I wonder how that one would play out.
My people are it again
I can’t say that I understand Irish issues well enough to render an informed opinion.
Wouldn’t a fairer question to submit to the polls be:
Option one: Northern Ireland unite with the Irish Republic as an independent country
Option two: Northern Ireland unite with the Irish Republic under British rule
Option 3: Leave it alone as it is.
What about a united Cyprus?
The Brits have owned north Ireland for 400 years.
The south just needs to get over it. Which the vast majority have.
Just like the Left in the United States.
They call a special election. They lose. In two years they have the question back on the ballot. Rinse, repeat, until they get the majority vote they wanted all along.
This they call the will of the people. I call it disrespect for the people who make choices and wish the nation to live by them.
Call this anything you like folks. I call it Leftist agitation. They come up with any excuse they can to cause trouble, even after decisions have been made.
Britain, including Scotland, and Ireland is our ally.
Reducing Britain’s clout, is not what I call a good thing for U. S. self interest.
We need a united people over there who will unite with us in times of trouble to thwart evil.
Not a big fan of Sinn Fein(We Ouselves), McGuinness, or Gerry Adams. I can still remember when the British media were forbidden to broadcast their real voices and had them dubbed because the gov didn’t want them using code to activate a terrorist cell.
‘Ourselves’
Northern Ireland is mostly Protestant, while the rest of Ireland is not only mainly Catholic...but Irish Catholic. Now the strong religious factions are breaking down so a united Ireland is possible IMO. The real hatred of each other’s religion began with William and Mary of Orange when they took the throne and legislated against just the Irish Catholics, forbidding them owning land, forbidding the Church holding mass, etc. Feelings run deep and it has taken centuries to get over...but religion seems to be a failing enterprise nowadays so perhaps everyone can live in harmony.
it’s all about the grudges. Think “Cromwell”.
I've been there.
The Greek side is green, clean and Christian.
The Turkish side is brown, dirty and Muslim.
Thus the attitude difference between the two countries.
Ireland (North and Republic of) and the two Koreas and all "north"-"south" countries will re-unite before Cyprus does. That's my read.
That’ll be the Martin McGuinness with links with terrorism around the globe, from the PLO to FARC, and the PIRA of course. He’s no respecter of the ‘Democratic Imperative’.
Like most of his Marxist comrades-in-arms he wants Ireland rid of British ties but doesn’t seem to have a problem with Islam.
My best friend in high school was a Catholic, and he left school in his Junior year to join his family regiment, the Royal Scots, as a musician in their regimental band.
One of the first questions he was asked was, “What religion are you?” Having grown up in the US, he innocently answered ‘Catholic’, and got belted in the mouth.
He did a tour in Northern Ireland. Bandsmen are tasked as stretcher-bearers, I’m told. He’s been out of the Army for ages. We’re still in touch and talk from time to time, even though he’s become a flaming lib.
I think that those three logical options as a referendum might make Sinn Fein, the political arm of the IRA if I recall correctly, sit down and shut up for a while.
my family is from the south of Ireland. growing up all the Irishers in our neighborhood supported the IRA and fought for the return of the six counties. then the asshats in the IRA went and blew up Lord Mountbatten on his yacht. The NY and the New England native Irish and IRA supporters went livid, pulled their support and shunned the IRA.
They ought have left Mountbatten alone.
The Orange men would be blooded fools to agree to this, what with several centuries of pay back built up in the Greens.
IIRC, right after 9/11, money they were raising stateside dried up.
Went to Ireland and hitchhiked our way to Belfast. Took a tour of the conflicted areas (right after the cease fire). Saw Sinn Fein headquarters with a media gaggle outside....Falls Road....Shankhill Road.....armoured vehicles.....murals. Police station covered with layers of barbed wire, steel, and concrete. Very surreal.
