Brazil’s Rio State Declares Financial Disaster Before Olympic Games
breitbart.com ^ | 6/18/16 | Breitbart News

Dornelles’ office said in a statement that the decision was made because a dip in revenues from taxes and oil royalties was “stopping the state of Rio de Janeiro from honoring its commitment to the organization of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

“The financial crisis has brought several difficulties in essential public services and it could cause the total collapse of public security, health care, education, urban mobility and environmental management,” the statement said.

Rio’s state government is in such dire straits that two of its hospitals were taken over by the Rio de Janeiro city government to allow doctors to keep receiving their paychecks. Some police stations are so underfunded that they have asked neighbors to donate basic items like toilet paper. Public workers and retirees have suffered months-long delays in receiving their money.

Who is Brazil kidding. The organizers of the Olympics expect most all the outstanding debts to be either ‘forgiven’ or negotiated. They just want it said that Brazil was THE host country, however that has to occur. Brazil and Puerto Rico and Greece all seem to have severe long term budgeting problems.

Obama was pushing to have this year's olympics in Chicago. At least we would have had a home field advantage in the shooting events.

But everything will be OK - the Olympic Committee wants to allow “trannies” (5-speed, 6-speed, automatic, 4x4??) to compete against the gender with which they identify!.

The press is trying to spin this as a positive thing for the filed socialist state. Giving them more powers to fix the problem. Much like the left’s gun control efforts.

The message is when the Government fails, it failed not because of it’s ineptness but because they didn’t have enough power to go far enough.

Yep, remember Obama’s embarrassing trip to Copenhagen to lobby for the Olympics.

And when the voting started, Chicago was the first city eliminated as the rounds of voting proceeded.

I still remember how flummoxed the news readers were on cable news that day. They were stunned, absolutely stunned, that Chicago could be eliminated so quickly, after Obama put himself out there personally to lobby for the games.

This is how the International Olympic Committee works. They suck up all the money, and leave the host city with the bill.

I remember the IOC howling at how badly Atlanta had managed the Olympics financially. What did Atlanta do wrong? They arranged it so the the city of Atlanta broke even on the games (which reduced the amount of money the IOC received).

Atlanta, as far as I know, is the only host in recent memory that didn’t end up deep in debt after the games left town. And, it’s the only host city the IOC has criticized for financial mismanagement.

The IOC, at this point in time, is a money making scam.

Brazil is a huge country in land mass, and has a diverse population, including people scrapping to get by in the rain forest. I’ve met families in Brazil who were just like the families I’ve known struggling in different parts of the US, and my heart goes out to them.

Health issues. Water problems. Russian track team banned from the Olympics. Zika. Bankruptcy.

Good grief.

My stepdaughter is married to a Brazilian, who has become a dual citizen. Remarkable guy, very bright, very well educated, stellar parent, quite successful - an example of a huge win for our country in terms of a great addition to our population. I respect his insight and opinion on many subjects. Of late when I ask about Brazil and the Olympics, he just shakes his head. What were very low expectations to begin with were then burdened with the national political crisis with Rouseff, the economic meltdown and then the Zika outbreak. When it rains it pours, I guess.

I know good people in Brazil, engineers and scientists, who have been heavily effected by the fallout of this utterly corrupt government. Many are out of work because it brought down entire industries. Some have reached out to me to see if they could come to the US. I’ve had to say that it seems anyone can but they probably will have to sneak across the border. Otherwise it’s hard as hell for well educated and productive people to get in. My heart goes out to them as well.

Yes, I hope Venezuela is not their future, sounds like they are trying to correct things. Much like here things are not always corrected by conventional methods.

Brasil should talk to the Saudi’s - they screwed everyone over on oil prices and it was pretty much open economic warfare on the people of Brasil. The Saudis outright screwed them in the pooper. OTOH, I don’t know how well many of you personally know Brasilians but..t...

Obama got busy pitching about how great he is but not about the facilities that would be created for the games.

He was met with a snore thankfully. Because it would have been a boondoggel for certain politicians both in Chicago and other cities including Madison Wisconsin and its governor Doyle. Which promised a fast train ride to certain venues there .But that after the games would be nothing but an expence for the state because it would be riderless.

Not exactly. Vancouver ended up with a balanced budget and the IOC didn’t say ‘boo’.
