GA County Has Trouble Organizing Gun “buy back”

Cheap Gun Opportunity Atlanta? July 2016

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is attempting to organize a gun turn in event in Atlanta, Georgia.  They hope to raise $100,000 to fund the event.  Two years ago, $40,000 was raised for a turn in event that brought in about a thousand firearms.  That event had competition from private buyers, who got some good deals.

There is a gofundme link for the event at the Sheriff Department website, but the link is not working. A correspondent says that the site raised $130 before it was closed.  At the Sheriff Department site, Sheriff Ted Jackson states his support for the concept of gun turn ins.  The events are not really “buy backs” because the people buying the firearms never owned them before. From the Sheriff Department site:

Sheriff Ted Jackson agrees, “Gun Buy Back programs are effective deterrents to violence in our communities. Public safety depends upon gun owners being responsible with firearms. Proper disposal of weapons is a big part of that. This initiative will provide a safe way to discard unwanted weapons and members of the community can do their part to protect their neighbors from harm.”

The event was originally scheduled for 9 June, 2016, but the date has been slipped.  It may be that money has been hard to come by or the event has been more challenging to organize than previously thought.

Under Georgia law, the guns taken in by law enforcement can not be legally destroyed. They are required to be sold at auction every six months. Presumably, the last 1,000 guns taken in have been sold or are sitting in storage, somewhere.

The Atlanta police department is sitting on at least 6,000 guns as of six months ago.

They are required to sell the guns every six months. If the Sheriff can get someone to donate $100K, and use it to gather 3,000 guns, the department could gain about half a million dollars!

At least there is some measure of common sense. It kills Fulton County that they can't destroy them.

Howz about a Muzzie buy back?

So, who is doing the “buying”?

Is it the state? The county? The guy with the badge who is taking the weapons and paying for them?

Shouldn’t every one of them go through a background check, not once, but for every transaction?

A boon for collectors of old/rare firearms.

An utter waste of time otherwise.

From what I understand in the past in Chitown, when the poleece had buy back programs, it was not unusual for someone to collect broken, old guns not worth repairing, bring in 5 or 6, get $100 a piece, and voila, buy a nice new fully operational handgun, legally or illegally. So much for keeping operating guns off the streets. Lol.

“..., and send them back to the 7th century...”

Wasted money.

They never left the 7th century.

They can’t “buy back” what they never owned.

Yes, technically. But they all believe they own ALL the guns and any gun the let one of us keep is an honor.

NONE of them believe in the Constitution of these United States, frankly. Tyrants.

Right. Turn in an eight hundred dollar firearm and get one fifty for it.

How much do they pay? I've been thinking of trading up.

In the article, they are having trouble getting money.

Last time they paid $50 in a gift card.
