Byron York: A rational reading of Trump's Muslim proposals
Washington Examiner ^ | Byron York

Posted on 06/18/2016 6:08:29 AM PDT by ErikJohnsky

Trump is in a general election environment now. And it appears he might be making some sort of transition to a new Muslim proposal, to refine the original Muslim ban into a radical Islam ban, in an effort to appeal to a wider electorate while not losing primary voters. The essence of governing is compromise, Trump might argue, and while he still believes in his original proposal, he knows there is substantial opposition. So here is the compromise: a ban on immigration from X countries and areas of the world with substantially radicalized populations.

It seems unlikely Trump would lose much of his current support with such a move. And he would gain, at least, among Republicans who have favored a country-by-country approach. (Ted Cruz, for one, proposed a country-by-country ban during the primaries.)

The Muslim ban proposal has set off near-hysterical reactions among both Democrats and some anti-Trump Republicans. The people who have called him bigoted, hateful, a Nazi, un-American, and more are not likely to calm down if Trump were to refocus his proposal. But Trump, supported by current events — the Orlando shooter's family just happened to come from one of the worst countries in the world in terms of Muslim radicalization — could reset the debate just the same.

If one understands negotiating, one would understand this is where Trump is headed.this position would have sounded radical if it was his opening.

I do not believe their is substantial disapproval of Trump’s proposal. In fact, I’d say it’s a damn lie.

that is true, tho I wonder if this is what Trump had been for in the primary, would other Republicans have followed him and it could’ve become mainstream faster?

However, the party of Islamic Hussein O’Muslim won’t implement it. Trump will.

Obama had his ban immigrants from Iran for 6 months. Probably Valerie Jarret had a hissy fit and stated Barack you better change that ban or else i will spill the beans about you being gay!

It may raise a good point, but most people do not want to see in Trump just another wishy-washy pol who changes his mind with every shift in the political winds.

Trump said from the start the complete ban was “temporary”. Obviously, once we get a handle on what is happening a more targeted approach is warranted.

First, find and deport all illegals.

Hunt down, prosecute and deport visa violators.

Then let's talk about 'reasonable' immigration policy.

When a politician uses the word 'reasonable', he's selling you out.

Why did you write that? Do you have evidence or the ever popular and usually wrong gut feeling. In fact, Trump's inability to articulate his own policy in a meaningful way hurts his ability to further any belief in the general election. Trump's proposal was supported by half the population when first proposed. Now, it is down to 25% because he can't explain his proposal in a way that is acceptable to people.

Trump also has no money for ads and is having a hard time raising money for his campaign since he said he will no longer self finance his campaign. He has already told the RNC he won't be running any ads until later (I don't know what later means) and he told the RNC that they will need to do the get out the vote operation since he won't have the money for that. I'm in Virginia and saw two Hillary ads last night and while vomit inducing, if I was an undecided voter would have to admit they were done well. One was a soft ad that focused on Hillary's journey from a young girl to powerful figure and the other was a policy ad, also well done and appears non threatening. Trump - nothing.

It is estimated that 10 to 15% of muslims world wide are radicalized. It is insane to let them in unless they are fully vetted and no danger to our nation. It is also insane to let in a non muslim that is a terrorist.

We must vet all that come into our nation least we suffer a 100 Orlandos.

“vetting” is a dubious concept to rely upon anyway

Sure, in ideal conditions one could hope to screen out those already actively affiliated with a jihad group. Realistically, however, we will lack that info even for many ppl who are already openly committed... and we will certainly lack the info for large numbers of ppl whose affiliation is so far fairly quiet, plus for all those who may “radicalize” in the future. Security wrt these populations will be very imperfect at best. Just how many Americans should have to die in pursuit of liberal wet dreams?

Not too funny, but more importantly that made no sense. Jarrett has power to override a president....but not for 6 months?!?!

Reasonable talking. In the late 1940s communism was outlawed in America. Anyone applying for employment or enlisting in the military signed a declaration they were not communists. During WWII Nasiism was outlawed in America. These were enemies of America and Americans. It seems that Radical-Muslimism could be outlawed too, as radical Muslimism wants to change America’s laws and kill all Christians, Jews, Hindus, Shintus, and all the rest of our religions who do not believe as muslims do.
