Trump, GOP lawmakers open door to restricting gun buys for those on watch list

A congressional push to ban or restrict gun sales for those on terror watch lists gained bipartisan momentum Wednesday, with everyone from key Republican lawmakers to Donald Trump to the National Rifle Association opening the door to discussing the idea.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee indicated interest in the push in a tweet Wednesday morning announcing a meeting with the NRA.

....The NRA, for its part, has walked a fine line on such proposals. On Tuesday, it tweeted that bans for people on watch lists are "ineffective, unconstitutional, or both."

Chris Cox, director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, clarified Wednesday that the NRA "believes that terrorists should not be allowed to purchase or possess firearms, period."

He said those on a watch list who try to buy a gun "should be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and the sale delayed while the investigation is ongoing." If there's evidence of terrorist activity, he said, the sale should be blocked and the suspect arrested. But he added, "At the same time, due process protections should be put in place that allow law-abiding Americans who are wrongly put on a watchlist to be removed."

This would essentially become a registration and confiscation technique.

They gather all the Form 4473 and view all who have purchased an AR-15 or similar firearm in the past forty years.
Place all those people onto a "watchlist" so they lose the ability to fly and are further stigmatized by being on a "watchlist" for having done nothing except exercise American freedoms.

Now they just kick-back and relax while decent law-abiding Americans have to explain to their families and employers why they cannot fly.
Employers will start terminating personnel who can no longer fly to see clients or attend internal meetings.

Husbands, wives, boyfriends, and girlfriends will begin quarreling due to being unable to fly due to "your dumb guns complicating our lives" and similar.
Generous financial awards will be offered to people who identify family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors who might otherwise possess guns not on the master list.

If there is anything Big Government enjoys, it is manufactured chaos pitting Americans against each other so they can put their jackboots on everyone's neck.

2. What standard of proof is required?

3. How does the individual get notified?

4. How does he appeal the determination?

5. Who pays for his legal representation?

In reality, the “watch list” needs to be run through the court system, with all its checks and limitations on governmental power. AND that includes the right to counsel.

The same must apply to any “mental illness” determination.

I think this latter one is even more dangerous than the watch list. A Leftist shrink could decide that all conservatives are mentally ill, or that wanting to own a gun or being a Christian is sufficient evidence of mental illness. I trust them all about as far as I can throw them.
