I have suspected this as well based upon some of the things I have read about him since the incident.

Another article says he was hanging out at the gay bar
Another article says he had a gay app on his phone to ping or something gay men
Another article says he was Hezbollah or something
Another article says he wasn't a Radical Islamic Terrorist, he just didn't like seeing men kissing men...
