Romney rips 2016 also-rans for losing to Trump

Mitt Romney laid into the large and rambunctious group of 2016 Republican candidates here on Saturday, arguing that they deserved a share of blame for the rise of Donald Trump.

During a question-and-answer session with CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer before around 250 Republican donors gathered here for the Romney-hosted Experts and Enthusiasts summit, the former Massachusetts governor said this year’s group of primary candidates misplayed their hand. By spending months attacking each other and ignoring Trump, he argued, they made a severe tactical error that allowed Trump — who Romney has criticized as a "con man" and a "fraud" — to escape unharmed.

“Their biggest failure was attacking each other and not the frontrunner,” Romney said. “Just politically, I thought that move was not right for them.”

Romney reserved particular scorn for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who Romney endorsed late in the primary process. The Texas senator, he pointed out, spent extensive time during the campaign praising Trump. He also said Ohio Gov. Kasich had divided the anti-Trump vote by remaining in the race long after it had become clear he didn’t have a realistic pathway to the nomination — a message he said had relayed personally to the Ohio governor. And Romney chided Right to Rise, the $100 million-plus Jeb Bush super PAC that spent heavily to tear down Bush rivals other than Trump.

“I thought it was an extremely large mistake on their part,” he said of Right to Rise.

Romney, though, credited Trump with waging a politically savvy primary campaign. “He played it extremely well,” he said, noting that the New York businessman had tapped into a deep vein of voter frustration. “It was a very effective strategy.”

As he has on previous occasions, Romney warned that a Trump presidency could have disastrous repercussions for the country.

A clear pattern is emerging. Those Republican "leaders" who do not like Donald Trump have decided--and I believe probably in consort--to find any excuse to keep talking about what they find offensive in Donald Trump, throughout the campaign. It is beginning to look more & more scripted--with some persisting in one narrative, some in another;--with some seeming to actually reconcile, before finding an excuse to reaffirm their previous doubts, and thus keep those doubts constantly in the news..

This is becoming a serious tactical experiment to undermine both Donald Trump and anyone else who rejects the "politically correct" mandate to suppress dissent to the premises of the American form of Collectivist/Egalitarian dogma.

We have to hone our skills to better counter a carefully crafted iteration of the facets of a very sophisticated smear campaign. The American future is at stake.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Loyal supporters of the GOP (myself among them) have finally admitted to ourselves that the party we’ve supported for so long has never had anything but contempt for us, and while accepting our support, they never supported us. People (like myself) want honest representation in our government and will no longer tolerate the back of their hand. There’s no better explanation why the modern American political class is importing constituencies, and carefully settling them in swing states.

Why does this asshat get any attention. Every village needs an idiot and this guy could fit the bill for every one of them.

The sad thing is this jerk is dangerous. He can peal off just enough support for Trump to cost him the election. Meanwhile on the other side, I bet we don’t hear another peep from Sanders. No, the dems congeal around their person, the GOPe does not unless it is a certified GOPe loser.

I wonder what Mitt is doing? Nobody really cares what his opinion about anything is.

Maybe he and Bill Kristol can start a new media empire called the Marxist Standard...

Most probably and that is where he belongs. After collapsing in the last election he is blaming everyone else. I voted for Romney and I hate it. He was nothing more than a figurehead or puppet. No wonder the Republicans lose. Candy Crowley made Romney out a liar when he was telling the truth. We must start a new party or get the Republican Elite out of the way. They are nothing but Democrats like the Clinton’s and Obama. America as a nation is on a downward spiral and we might quite well not recover if we do not stand. I think real Americans should arm themselves to the teeth we may have to fight to survive.

Trump is SO much better than Romney.

The price was high, but if a Romney win in 2012 would mean more Romneyism, and NEVER anything resembling a useful answer, the poison of another term of Obama may have been necessary. Another dose via hrc would be lethal, so it has to stop here.
