Colorado Has 40 Times More Natural Gas Than Once Believed

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) officials said Wednesday that western Colorado has upwards of 40 times more natural gas than previously believed, making it the second largest natural gas producing formation in the U.S.

The Mancos Shale formation in Colorado’s Piceance Basin, located in the western section of Colorado, nestles nearly 70 trillion (66.3 trillion) cubic feet of gas. This marks a massive uptick from the 1.6 trillion cubic feet estimated in 2003, research shows.

A trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to the U.S. Energy Department, is enough to heat 15 million homes for a year — 66. 3 trillion cubic feet of gas, therefore, is capable of warming hundreds of millions of homes.

I am a believer that gas and oil are not fossil fuels but geologic fuels.

Frozen burritos? Heaven forbid! Homemade with any of seven varieties of dried roasted chile peppers bought by the bushel sack. No pot necessary to encourage their consumption either.

If I could hook myself up to the boiler and water heater my Excel bill would be zero right now. lol

I am a believer that gas and oil are not fossil fuels but geologic fuels.

I also support that idea. I was even skeptic as a child when our science books showed diagrams of oil pools under the earth with dinosaur bones in them. I couldn't understand how dinosaurs were the ONLY source of oil and natural gas. Unfortunately, the teachers weren't open to alternative ideas and always extinguished the questions.

They might make a lot of money liquifying and exporting much of it. World consumption of dry natural gas is over 100 trillion cubic feet per year.

I’m from Texas. I’d like to keep my thermostat at 70 in the summer and 80 in the winter if it weren’t so expensive!

U.S. yearly consumption was close to 30 trillion cubit feet in 2010, by the way.
