Nine months after announcing that China would help build a high-speed rail line from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, the private U.S. company behind the plan said late Wednesday that the deal was off.

A bullet train stops at the platform before it travels to Lanzhou from the Urumqi south railway station in XpressWest said the decision to terminate the relationship with China Railway International was based “primarily upon difficulties associated with timely performance and CRI’s challenges in obtaining required authority to proceed with required development activities.”

XpressWest indicated that its “biggest challenge” was a federal government requirement that high-speed trains must be manufactured in the United States to secure regulatory approvals.

A High-speed rail-line from the LA Area to Vegas is a No-Brainer. It has both the population density and the demand to be self-sustaining after construction, unlike the $6 Billion dollar Valley boondoggle.

This is the type of Infrastructure project the government SHOULD be supporting. The economic development potential is enormous. Instead, government has blocked this at every step, for almost three decades now.

The HSR in the California valley is costing over $500 million PER MILE. $6 billion would only build twelve miles of it.

That thing is going to cost $200bn to $300bn by the time the Democrats get done sucking graft out of it.

“This is the type of Infrastructure project the government SHOULD be supporting.”

Supporting yes, financing NO! There’s lots that can be done to support, such as preempting the a-hole state regulators, and also preempting the EPA bunch and all the other federal departments.

Do all that, along with some eminent domain where necessary, and you may well have something that the casinos in Vegas would be willing to finance. Like you’re getting at, the traffic on I-15 between LA and Vegas is immense, particularly on weekends. The train doesn’t even have to be a real ‘bullet’ train, as the run is rather short, just averaging 80 mph would make everyone happy.

Because US companies have such vast experience in building high-speed trains? Seriously, better leave that part to those who know how.
