Ever read an old poem called KENTUCKY LARNIN? It is about a little colored boy who steals a watermelon and shames his “good Christian mammy”.
She goes on for several verses about how she is shamed because he stole it. “And because you stole it, you don’t get a piece!”
“WY IT”S GREEN!”
Then she goes on for several verses on how to tell a ripe melon from a green melon.
I knew a woman fifty years ago who could recite the entire poem from memory.
Yeah, I lived in Fla in the 50’s...lol.
