A restrained Donald Trump tries reaching out to GOP critics

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y — Donald Trump has long said he can be presidential if he wants to be, and on Tuesday, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee tried. He kicked off his general election campaign with one of the most measured speeches yet, in which he cast himself as a “champion” of the American people who is better positioned than Hillary Clinton to lead the country.

Reading from a teleprompter — something he has criticized Clinton and others for using — Trump laid out a lengthy attack against the former secretary of state, describing her as a career politician who has sought to personally profit from her years in public service. Among other things, Trump said Clinton had “turned the State Department into her private hedge fund” and that she made “hundreds of millions” by selling access to special interests.

Trump said Clinton, if elected, would be a “disaster” for the country.

“We can’t solve our problems by counting on the politicians who created our problems,” Trump declared, addressing a few hundred supporters at a golf club he owns here. “The Clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves.”

The Manhattan billionaire announced that he would make a longer speech about the Clinton record next week. At the same time, he made a direct appeal to the supporters of her rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, saying he was a victim of a “rigged system” in the Democratic primary.

“To those who voted for someone else in either party, I will work very hard to earn your support,” Trump said.

Love the way folks always seem to ignore the facts when trying to take a swat at Trump - he made it clear that when one wanted to stay on track with a in-depth set of facts/issues, that was the time to use a teleprompter.

To keep one from sounding stupid and accidentally letting some of your personal truths out (as applies to Hillary and "others") then it is a tool of obfuscation.

Two very different candidates. One tells the truth. The other is an evil, prolific liar. How can two candidates for President of our country be sooooooo different.

Some of those GOPe/critics were ALWAYS DEMOCRATS. They’ve been forced into a corner now and can’t help but acknowledge it. To hell with them.

EVERYTHING Hillary says or does has been lawyer-tested, focus-grouped, and having benefit of pre-arranged media plants who will herald each instance.

I saw that speech - excellent. Even on a teleprompter, Trump ad libs & his sense of humor shows through. He got a lot of applause & the audience was “into” what he was saying. When he’s just talking, he’ll go all around a point & sometimes not make it; however, on the teleprompter, he summarized Hilly’s foreign policy failures & smoothly went from one failure to another in the middle east, tying them together & ended up with the refugee problem in Europe. He even landed a right hook on Obama (the thin-skinned one will be steaming). Personally, I think Trump should use the teleprompter more often here & there, interspersed with his free-wheeling style that people love .... it keeps him on message and he gets his points across and there are a boatload of good points to be made against Hilly & Obama (who will also be campaigning).

I hope he’ll have his ducks similarly in a row for Monday.

Not just them. It does seem that the vast majority of 'pubs have no principles whatever. They decided they wanted to be top-tier elected pols and chose the best path to be with a winner. They follow the game plan, because that's there marching orders. Then there are those who have no loyalty except to their winning team.

Trump has destroyed that team and is replacing it with his own. Notice how most of them couldn't resist when Trump made his incomplete statement about the judge? They just couldn't resist showing that they're still not loyal or even decent human beings.

On the plus side, it probably flushed out the traitors from within. I'll put Gingrich in that category.

I just hope it “takes” and we can run off these pretenders for good. The party has been infiltrated for years. It is corrupted to the core.

There is a time and place when one should use a prepared text. The point is that Trump, by all means, has been the most accessible candidate and well-able to speak extemporaneously. It is also important to note that when Trump speaks with a prepared text, he is expressing things that he has talked about in many other venues. . .they are his words and ideas. When Obama speaks, it is always canned content obviously written by his handlers. . same with Hildebeast. . .so those two come off very mechanical and insincere whereas the Donald conveys sincerity in any format. . because he is saying exactly what he thinks. . .teleprompter or otherwise.

Mr. Trump,

You have my blessing to say and do whatever you need to do to get elected but after you are sworn in your best remember you original promises. I won’t blame you and I kinda expect you to be vindictive and get even with the RINOs and liberals in the media who lied about you. I still expect immediately after you hand lifts from the Bible on swearing in you issue an order to revoke all actions by Obama, including the unaffordable healthcare act. I also want you to pressure congress to hold a constitutional convention to reinforce our basic rights like the right to bear arms and to reaffirm states rights.

And to order construction of the Mexican border wall to begin your first day in office and illegals immediately bussed to the Mexican border for perfunctory deportation.

To me it sounded as if the TelePrompTer was used more as a list of bullet talking points rather than 15 minutes of prose to be read word for word.

I agree. Since Trump sometimes veers off his point and is distracted, It keeps him on message.

Agree. It seemed like more of an outline, than a full-scale, word for word speech (that most politicians tend to rely on).
