The suspect in the shooting of a UCLA professor has been named as PhD candidate Mainak Sarkar. The victim was Professor William Klug, 39, a teacher in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Sarkar was first identified in a report by CBS News. He was a native of Minneapolis and had a PhD in solid mechanics from UCLA. The shooting prompted a two-hour lockdown at the school with LAPD Charlie Beck telling the media when it was over, “The campus is entirely contained. We believe there are no suspects outstanding and no continuing threat to UCLA’s campus.”
Things to Know About the UCLA Shooting:
Sarkar came to UCLA with a pistol, and was clad in all black gear. It was reported that Sarkar was upset over his current grades, which caused his rampage shooting. He was shot down and killed by police in the office of engineering complex. Sarkar has no reported criminal history.

Errr... Mainak is Sanskrit.
So, he was an American Indian?

I read on another thread that he was born in India.
Interesting note: the shooter is a Hindu from India, and he had accused the professor he killed of stealing a large amount of computer code from him, claiming it as his own, then giving it to another student to complete.
If true, this puts a very different complexion on the story. One of academic fraud and theft. This does happen, and it can be pretty vicious.
Typically it is done by setting up one or a team of graduate students to do enormous amounts of work that they think is contributing to their degree or at least credit, then the professor claims credit for their work, and even patents their research under his name. And the professor is backed up by some equally corrupt administrator(s), who threaten to destroy the student’s career if they complain about it.
It really crosses the boundary when they actually do sabotage a student who complains. And this might be key in this case, where suddenly, after years of exemplary academic performance, his grades were suddenly destroyed.
Typically this would not only mean an end to his graduate studies, but the end to his academic career, and locked out of employment in his field of work.
As I said, this can be pretty vicious. And yet, without further evidence this is all speculation. But if it was the case, it would provide a very strong motive.
It might be Sarkar....but I go with....Aliens
