Applications for U.S. citizenship soared in the first three months of the year compared with 2015, appearing to confirm the predictions of several Democratic-leaning groups that the numbers would climb in response to the presidential campaign of Republican Donald Trump.

Great! They’re actually applying for citizenship instead of sneaking in.
It could be more people apply for citizenship so that they vote for Trump. Green card holders are unable to vote.
These would be permanent residents (i.e., those already living here legally) applying for citizenship, not immigration applications.
I was born here of American parents, and had to be an American citizen for 18 years before I could vote. These people should also have to be a citizen for 18 years before they can vote.
I’m not sure about that. The reason why is unknown.
Personally, I suspect apprehension about immigration status as a foreign resident may be driving some of this. I.e., they are legally here, but there is some risk of the laws changing.
Or, possibly, they want to vote against Trump.
Understood. But that still shows they know they’d better get to it before Trump gets in and starts deporting.
I’ve been a resident for 30 years, and I vote - in the Spanish elections.
The problem is that Democrats are probably processing citizenship forms with the same careful attention (ahem) that they use when they count votes.
Yeah, so?
This is a problem, why?
This is most likely Dems fast-tracking people in that’ll vote reliably Democratic.
Sorry, but there’s every reason to be cynical about this.
Nobody hates illegal immigration more then those who waded through the time and expense of legally immigrating and becoming a citizen.
I think a lot of those votes could go to Trump.
I first voted in 1972, when I was 22, I could not vote in 1968, when I was 18, but 18 year olds could vote in 1972. Life is unfair.
Clinton fast-tracked applications before his second election.
My stepdaughter has been a legal resident alien for 30 years. She has now applied for Citizenship. She WANTS to vote FOR TRUMP.
One of my Aunts, who is almost 80, has never voted. She registered this year so she could vote FOR TRUMP!
The word is out that all you have to do is apply and you get citzenship so long as you let the immigration authorities fill out your ballot in November.
Nothing quite says patriotism and loyalty like becoming a citizen of a country solely to vote against the interests of that country and its people (and that is certainly the only reason Dems are pushing to get members of certain groups to apply for citizenship right now).
the naturalization process for citizenship used to take close to a year. Classes in civics and American History were part of the program. And I believe there was a waiting period required.
What’s it like now?
‘Great! Theyre actually applying for citizenship instead of sneaking in.”
Actually these are people who were lawfully admitted as Permanent Resident’s. (Green Card holders). They have to have been in US for five years or three if married to US citizen before they are eligible to apply for citizenship.
I suspect if the author of the article took the time to look at the immigration numbers from 3 and 5 years ago there is not much of a surge...
