Trump aide on VP: Picking a woman, minority 'would be viewed as pandering'

Paul Manafort, a top aide to Donald Trump, said the presumptive Republican nominee is unlikely to pick a woman or minority for the position because "that would be viewed as pandering, I think."

In a lengthy interview with the Huffington Post, Manafort also said Trump's selection needs to be well-seasoned in politics.

"He needs an experienced person to do the part of the job he doesn't want to do. He sees himself more as the chairman of the board, than even the CEO, let alone the COO," Manafort said.

The veteran political operative suggested that the highly anticipated choice should be viewed as proof of Trump's presidential readiness, and he said that "there is a long list of who that person could be."

He added: "Everyone one of them has major problems."

Trump himself has said he would like to pick "a political person" with experience in legislating. Campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who is heading the vetting team, also told CBS the selection will have "federal legislative experience."

Manafort's comments come within the backdrop of a fierce internal struggle at the Trump campaign.

Though campaign has said Lewandowski is heading the vetting team, surrogates and team members -- most notably Ben Carson -- have sent mixed messages about the process and who is being considered.

Trump/Gingrich. Glenn Beck’s worst nightmare, LOL!

He is right. The requirements do not call for a vagina, nor do they call for some ethnic/pigmentation diversity.

They (requirements) call for an American only. One that is ready, willing, and able to help us take our country back.

Beck is meaningless now. I have more faith in Pee Wee Herman, frankly.

Why would anyone tip there had and confess “”Everyone one of them has major problems.” Trump would never give that away and put a target on everyone’s back. Things about Manafort I just don’t understand.

He’s the one that said that basically was behaving in one manner to win the primary...but lose the “persona” once he is the party’s candidate

A good negotiator never gives away information that’s not needed....

I agree. Choosing a woman or a minority would create the impression of inevitability in this and future elections.

I agree. Please Mr Trump, pick someone who is COMPETENT. I don’t care their gender, color, hyphenated origin or religious affiliation. Just someone who can help you make America great again!

Politics is deal making of a different sort. Window dressing can be just as important as structural architecture. Sounds like Trump only wants to preside from 50,000 feet and not be hands on, thus the need for an insider work horse like Gingrich for VP.

I disagree and would prefer him to “pander” with his VP choice. I would like to see a young attractive Spanish speaking private sector hero who embraces the American Dream and has created jobs and infrastructure.

VP’s aren't supposed to do anything anyways, just ask crazy Joe.

Just a caution that this statement is from Paul Manafort and not Donald J. Trump himself.

Manafort yesterday said Mr. Trump will not permit
Islamic invasion.

Mr. TRUMP: GET RID OF THIS LOSER, or wish you did.

“Trump/Gingrich. Glenn Beck’s worst nightmare, LOL!”

Are you sure it’s Beck’s worst nightmare? I thought a person had to have a brain to have nightmares.

I was for a gender/race pick to help him win. Now since it looks like he will crush Hillary regardless, a PC pick is not necessary.
