STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish aircraft maker Saab has unveiled the latest version of its Gripen fighter jet.

About 500 people, including Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist and Brazilian air force commander Nivaldo Luiz Rossato, watched the rollout of the new Gripen E on Wednesday in Linkoping, about 170 kilometers (105 miles) southeast of Stockholm.

The E fighter is slightly bigger than previous versions, has a stronger engine and updated radar systems. It has been in development for about 10 years. The first test flight is expected later this year.

Brazil has ordered 36 Gripen fighters for delivery between 2019 and 2024.

"...Saab Gripfen fighter jet..."

As long as Saab is not Chinese-owned like their competitors over at Volvo! LOL. :-)

If it works as well as their cars, I’d not want any part of it.

Every thread with planes there is always some deranged person claiming it looks like [insert random US plane here]. No, it does not have any F-16 in it.

Not a stealth plane. But for most roles I doubt that makes a difference.

I was thinking the nose looks like a bit like that of the old F4 Phantom.

I’ll be this plane comes a lot closer to meeting its design goals than the F35 has so far. The F35 really seems to be a dog, a very expensive dog at that.

The Gripen and F 16 have General Electric engines.

I think from ahead and above it does resemble the Falcon a bit.

Anyway, it seems to me that from the beginning and certainly with this new model if I was the Saab chieftain that every Gripen would be aircraft carrier capable. That should expand the potential market and also have short runway and straight sction of highway potential. Also offer maintenance advantages in hot humid and/or salt air climates. Give their marketing hands more things to tout.

No, it’s a single. Saab used two side intakes instead of a nose or belly single intake is all. The biggest difference (to my eye) is those side intakes vs the F-16 single underbelly intake. The canards on the Gripen take the place of the extended leading edge of the F-16’s cropped-delta wings, because the Gripen’s side intakes make a semi-blended wing like the ‘16 has impossible.

The cockpit of the 16 protrudes a bit more above the airframe as well.

"What’s with the smiley face below the cockpit?"

That photo has to be one of the lousiest P-shop jobs -- ever.

It's a photo of a mock--up -- sitting on a shiny floor -- with a half-@$$3d job of blurring out the landing gear and with terrain pasted in underneath -- to fake the impression that the thing actually flies.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't get me wrong: the Gripen is a pretty fair A/C -- but Saab's managers who allowed the marketing and graphics pukes to publish such an embarrassment should be put out on the street -- along with them...
